Nathaniel Mayer I want love and affection (not the house of correction) 1966

A soul classic I just heard on Boss Radio 66.

The Hunger (1983) 40th anniversary

Today in 83 this vampire movie (wiki) came out. Starting David Bowie Susan Sarandon and Catherine Deneuve. Featuring Bauhaus doing Bela Lugosi's dead it was quite good. We saw Bauhaus in Bristol  at the Trinity Centre. Was good. I don't remember when but it was fairly early on.

D. C. Washington - the Mohawk

Possibly offensive to Mohawks but it has merit as a dance record. Here

Out August 1 2023 Born in Chicago

Looks interesting but the title is a bit off as it wasn't really born in Chicago but in Mississippi. Maybe you could argue that it was conceived in Mississippi but born in Chicago. I shall watch it anyway. Trailer here

I first encountered Barry Humphries in his hilarious strip Barry McKenzie. My Uncle had a collection and we read it and laughed. Also saw Dame Edna Everage live at the Bristol Hippodrome.

The early days of the Bad Detectives

Me about the time the group started

This is how I remember it started. Charlie Fenby was to be the original singer with Mark on guitar. I was asked to play harmonica but the first practice Charlie didn't really know any lyrics so I started singing as I knew the words to songs. I was 16 and it was 1976 I reckon. Still at school. Mark had a tiny Leo amp and we had no vocal amplification. Our first purchase was a Mic and stand.

We used to use the Youth wing Frome to practice in and we had a good set up with that. I think it was me who suggested Ivan on bass. He was in my class at school so I knew he liked decent music. Next recruit was Bunse who was very young and did not look 18 which he wasn't he was about 15. But no-one cared about being underage in those days. Our first proper gig (as opposed to a party) was the Three Swans pub. It went very well. Still putting vocals and harp in the guitar amp 2nd channel. Ivan made a home made bass amp which was chipboard and it exploded one night. In time I bought a small Wem PA that was a wise investment as it was in constant use over the next few years.

1978 left to right Ivan me and Bunse in front Mark (Henry)

New York Dolls Looking for a Kiss Old Grey Whistle Test 1973

In November this will be 50 years old. Miming. But still good to see I think. Jerry Nolan joined on drums Autumn 1972. I didn't see this at the time I was only 13 and OGWT was on about 11 o'clock.

The Girl Can't Help It (1956) - Little Richard

This movie has some ace Little Richard and Fats Domino clips too. My four favourite rock n roll stars in one movie.

Gene Vincent & his Blue Caps Be Bop a Lula 1956

From the Girl Can't Help It. Gene when he was young and just starting out captured in colour. How good is that? If he didn't do anything else this would have immortalized him.

The Girl Can't Help It (1956) trailer

A wonderful film which is one of my all time favourites. So many good clips of great artists. The original plan was to have a cameo from Elvis on the tv but Colonel Tom wanted too much so they used Eddie instead giving him a great break.

A Taste of Honey

Cotton Picker Eddie Cochran 1957.

From the movie Untamed Youth. Saturday night 🌙selection.  I remember this song from when I went on a school trip to France. Although we were young we hung out at a bar drinking beer and playing pinball and listening to the jukebox. Two good records Gene Vincent Be Bop a Lula/ Baby Blue and Eddie Summertime blues/Cotton Picker. Sounded like heaven. I don't remember the name of the town in Normandy it was but it was on the coast.

Bob Dylan Shadow Kingdom trailer

Here. My son just told me about this. Made during lockdown.

Goodnight Boogie

A book about Hound Dog Taylor? Thanks to Bob Corritore for this info.

Hound Dog Taylor made guitars howl and hips shake. A founding father of lo-fi blues rock—that gritty, stripped-down sound played on cheap guitars with no bass—Taylor and his band The HouseRockers played loud, wild gut-bucket boogie that was raw and ferocious, earning them a reputation as "The Ramones of the blues." Though his influence continues to be heard in the music of contemporary musicians such as Jack White, The Black Keys, and others, Hound Dog Taylor's story has never been fully explored. Off stage, his life was as wild as his music. From his childhood in 1920s Mississippi to his final years in 1970s Chicago, he was surrounded by racism, crime, and violence. The threat of bloodshed was constant, whether from the Ku Klux Klan, South Side gangs, or even fellow musicians. From drunkenly slicing off his sixth finger with a straight razor, to becoming the artist whose music launched the now-legendary Alligator Records, Goodnight Boogie is the first in-depth biographical study of the Blues Hall of Famer whose life was as compelling as his music. This is the story of a brilliant and unforgettably original musician who struggled for success while fighting to survive. Foreword written by Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys.

Plane shot down over Radstock

A German plane crashed at Haydon. Read the pilot's account here. My Grandfather was an officer in the Home Guard and they guarded the wreckage. My uncle got a bit of tailplane with a swastika on it.

Stuart Mitchell tells me also of a JU88a near Stoke Saint Michael - here

Picked up this in a charity shop

Pretty interesting . Slag from Radstock's batches were used as hard-core for the new runways built my father tells American trucks would continually be visiting the heaps.

Stuart Mitchell tells me "The aircraft depicted on the front cover is a Westland Whirlwind . Built at Westlands in Yeovil and powered by two Rolls Royce Peregrine engines , only 114 examples were built and only equipped three RAF squadrons . They were operated from Colerne in Wiltshire and it’s satellite Airfield at Charmy Down just outside Bath . Used mostly in a ground attack role on the enemy occupied continent."

The 18 wartime GIs executed at Shepton Mallet prison for rape and murder

The Party's Over (1965) full movie

Here. Starring a youngish Oliver Reed.

The Party's Over is a black-and-white British film directed by Guy Hamilton and starring Oliver Reed. Filmed in 1963, it was censored in the UK over scenes of implied necrophilia, which delayed its release until 1965. It was produced by Anthony Perry, with music by John Barry. Guy Hamilton asked for his name to be removed from the credits in protest at the censorship of the film.[1]

Gene Vincent and the Houseshakers I'm Movin' On

Rocking up a storm. I used to have this as a youth on an l.p. I no longer have it but I think it was a 1971 record called Battle of the Bands but I am not certain. It is an utterly brilliant song that reminds me of the late Jake Stratton-Kent as he liked this too. Houseshakers wiki

Kurylenko a Ukrainian/French actress who I first noticed in a movie Centurion where she played a mute tracker. This doesn't have a trailer yet but the eternal optimist in me hopes it will be good. Me and my son did a drama documentary on Boudica about 20 years ago. One of my favourite heroines.
