Fountain Inn Buckland Dinham

So this is where I learned to drink cider. The Fountain Inn at Buckland Dinham. Now a house but it didn't look unlike this photo - no sign. There was no bar - they used to go to a room for the drinks. Mainly cider. I remember the experience well. I was about 14. Cider was about 10p and they did cheese and raw onion rolls for about 15p.  I had friends who lived in the village and they didn't refuse to serve you alcohol .Shove ha'penny was played there. We used to cycle out and on the way back would spew. Landlord was called Vic. I think his father Charlie ran it before him. Locals called it Charlie's.  Landlady was Audrey.

Adam & The Ants - Stand And Deliver 1981

Came out 40 years ago today. Didn't really like it but we bought it all the same. We were happy to see him so successful but it was a bit like the end of an era. B-side side was Beat My Guest. Wiki

Titanic's last photo

This picture is interesting to me as it is taken at Fennell's Bay County Cork. This was a place Susan's Gran was from - she lived in a place called Liner View as you could see the big ships queuing up. Visited it many times.  Susan's Gran Florence from Ireland was lovely. She lived in Frome in later years and had some great memories of the Irish Civil War and all the ships and so forth from the time.  Titanic visited Queenstown County Cork in its last port of call before the Atlantic.

Susan's Gran and Mum at Fennell's Bay County Cork

Sticky Fingers 50th

Not one of their best but still good.

The Chocolate Watchband - Are You Gonna Be There (At the Love In) 1967

I am sure there ought to be a question mark in that title.

The Who - A Quick One (While He's Away) 1968

One of the best Who clips I reckon. From the Rock n Roll Circus.

Win or Lose Lew Lewis Reformer 1979

Single on Stiff that was good.

Poly Styrene

10 years ago we lost Poly Styrene. If you haven't seen the recent documentary film I am a Cliche then check it out.

Koko Taylor - Good advice 1966

 Version of the below song.

J.B. Lenoir - "Grandma's Advice/Farmors Råd" - 1965

From the original half hour 16mm b/w film made by Steve and Ronnog Seaberg and Marshall Matson featuring blues musician, J.B. Lenoir, playing and singing "Grandma's Advice" in his living room on Dante Street on Chicago's South Side. Meant for swedissh television writer Ronnog Seaberg translates it into Swedish. The film was never used in Sweden and remained in the Seaberg's home for almost forty years until it was used by Wim Wenders' in The Soul of a Man in 2003. It was finally shown in Sweden at the Gothenburg Film Festival in January 2004. The New Yorker called it "the film within the film".

The Final Stand | UK Trailer | 2021 | WWII Action

The Final Stand is a gripping and hard hitting WWII thriller based on the unbelievable true story of the heroic military stand outside Moscow in 1941.

The B-52's - Deadbeat Club 1990

"Deadbeat Club" is a song by the B-52's. The song is about the band's early days in Athens when they would hang around in cafes drinking coffee. Because they didn't work or do anything, their parents nicknamed them "Deadbeats".

Every Hanna-Barbera TV Series (1957 - 1979)

A bit of nostalgia of the animated kind. This is like seeing my childhood in 15 minutes.

Sonny Boy Williamson II Eyesight To The Blind (1951)

I remember the joy I felt when I finally got to hear this. In the old days it was hard to hear things that you wanted to - you could order a record - out of a big book - you could maybe ask a record shop to play a song - which I used to do at Milsom's in Bath as they had a listening booth and stocked blues albums. You could send off mail order which I used to do or maybe you could hear it on the radio but it was not easy like today.

 Great rhythm n blues record.

Lizards and Slow worms

Today, Shakespeare's birthday is the date associated with the return of the lizards and Slow worms though in reality it's the week or so before. We love both and when we lived in Radstock we would see a lot. Oce we had one crawling up the wall and sometimes they would be indoors. Picture by Susan.

Sid Vicious' leather jacket

Lewis Leathers posted this and I thought it was interesting. It's a Dominator leather heavily customised.

Theobold Arms Nunney Catch Frome

An occasional series on local pubs. I think this is closed now. The road layout changed which may have been a feature. Listed building 17th century updated in the 19th. I played there with the Bad Detectives in the skittle alley in about 1978 and I remember seeing a ferret hutch out the back. Lots of the punters were Romany and really danced when we did an Elvis song so we did all the Elvis ones we knew. It was close enough to Frome to enable people to walk out from Frome. We had a great time there.

Tronics - Shark Fucks 1981

A family favourite of ours.  Something you won't hear on the Radio. We were on a compilation with this song that's how we know it (Messthetics). But it is brilliant. Give it a spin if you don't know it.

Ludella - JIMMY ROGERS and his Trio (Chess 1435) 78rpm 1950

Classic Chicago blues with Little Walter on harp. We used to have African clawed frogs as pets in the 80s and one was called Ludella after this song. This record has lovely bass on it - blues of this type needs a stand up bass.

IGGY POP - I'm Bored 1979

Iggy Pop's birthday. I like this one - saw him about then.

Rolling Stones - Brown Sugar - 1971 - Top of The Pops

The Small Faces - Lazy Sunday Afternoon 1968

20 years today we lost Steve Marriott in a house fire.

This film I have not seen before but you have probably seen it but if not then you are in luck. The low-budget promotional video for "Lazy Sunday" was filmed at Kenney Jones 's parents' home on Havering Street in Stepney, east London.Got to number 2.

Nappy Brown - Coal Miner 1961

I tried to do a cover of this a few years ago but it's nothing without the sax.

I believe this was recorded 55 though not released until 1960. Written by Clarence Carter. A well covered song most notably by the Yardbirds.

Willie Love - Take It Easy Baby 1951

I like Willie Love. Great songs bits of which appear in later Sonny Boy records as they were friends.

Lew Lewis 1979

 - Wait Stop - Boogie On The Street - Don Tcha - Louie Louie

RIP Lew Lewis

It seems Lew Lewis has died. (Source: Wilko Johnson Facebook). Here is my favourite moment but he was a very talented harmonica player. If you want to see and hear more search Lew Lewis on this blog. He played with the Hot Rods, and his own band on Stiff.

Eddie Cochran - Cotton Picker 1957

From the movie Untamed Youth. This was on a juke box in France on the flip of Summertime Blues and I grew to love it.

Eddie Cochran - Teenage Heaven (1959)

The Hightower Brothers - Seat In The Kingdom

On the subject of Richard Hell and the Voidoids this is the original of the song 'I'm Your Man'. Great bit of gospel.

Richard Hell & The Voidoids - Time

Susan is a fan of this song and I have to concur.

Lyrics: Time and time again I knew what I was doing and Time and time again I just made things worse It seems you see the most of what is really true when You're stepping into your hearse Only time can write a song that's really really real The most a man can do is say the way its playing feels And know he only knows as much as time to him reveals And when I want to write a song that says it all at once Like time sublimely silences the whys I know that if I try I'm going to take a fall at once And splatter there between my lies Only time can write a song that's really really real The most a man can do is say the way its playing feels And know he only knows as much as time to him reveals We are made of it and if we give submission Among our chances there's a chance we can choose And if we take it, by uncertainty's permission Then it's impossible to lose Only time can write a song that's really really real The most a man can do is say the way its playing feels And know he only knows as much as time to him reveals

The Fall - Victoria 1988

Maybe a slightly pointless cover of the Kinks but it was probably fun to do.  I do like this though.

Terraplane fixation sleeve

I always get a little miffed when I read about how brilliant the Smiths single sleeves were. 'An image from a movie and a band name nothing more' they say. 'Yes where did they get that idea from?' I mutter under my breath.

Civil War News cards

So another Civil War memory from when I was really young were these bubblegum cards which also came with Confederate currency. This page is dedicated to them. Quite awash with graphic violence which I probably liked.

Sonny Boy Williamson II - Little Village 1961

Some amusing banter (includes swearing) from Sonny Boy and Leonard Chess at the beginning of this. Sonny Boy is my all time favourite bluesman though I have a lot of artists I really like.

The Terraplanes 'Evil Going On' 1981 Bristol Granary

So I don't know the exact date of this - 40 years ago. Probably the summer. It was a Battle of the Bands for local what's on guide Out West and I remember we sent a single but I cant be sure of the date. It's an accurate capture of the look of us at the time. I remember we had to pay something like £20 to get a video film of the show at the Granary Bristol. We didn't wait around to hear who won - we didn't bring a load of fans like the other bands had. I remember an argument with Andy during the soundcheck but it got resolved quickly. It was literally just us and a driver so we were a little tense. It was the only time this line up did a gig.

Punks & New Romantics in Kings Road (1981)

40 years ago at this time I had stopped identifying as a punk and I didn't go to the King's Road any more.  New Romantics didn't really impact us in Frome. It wasn't that we were anti fashion just we were trying to create our own look to an extent. We used the shop Johnsons for key items.  Lloyd Johnson wiki

Walter Horton
, better known as Big Walter (Horton) or Walter "Shakey" Horton (April 6, 1921[2] – December 8, 1981) was an American blues harmonica player. A quiet, unassuming, shy man, he is remembered as one of the premier harmonica players in the history of blues.[3] Willie Dixon once called Horton "the best harmonica player I ever heard."[3]

Van Morrison and The Chieftains "My Lagan love" 1988

I was going to post the Dusty version but I opted for this instead. Historical song from the Belfast area.

My Lagan Love - Wikipedia

Where Lagan streams sing lullabies There blows a lily fair. The twilight gleam is in her eye, The night is on her hair. And like a lovesick lenashee She hath my heart in thrall. No life have I, no liberty, For love is Lord of all. And often when the beetles horn Has lulled the eve to sleep, I'll steal into her sheiling lorn And through the doorway creep. There on the cricket's singing stone, She makes the bogwood fire And sings in sweet and undertone, The song of hearts desire.

Mells Daffodil Day
