Cider - from Somerset 2008
A film Susan and I made of a place that is no longer going so we were glad to have documented it.
Buying cider from a farm in North-east Somerset. Music 'Cider' by Social Security a punk band from the 70s who were based in Bristol (and were great). We also buy a lump of tasty cheddar cheese.
Drink Up Thy Zider (1967)
Susan and myself have been to quite a few places where cider is made and had a go ourselves with not bad results but one of our friends is a real expert and has all the equipment - barrels presses all very much a commitment. Anyway here is the great Adge Cutler a man loved in this region. I saw them live at about this time at a firework display in Frome.
Lidls new cider 'Compton Orchard'
Lidls have a new cider. 'Made in Somerset by family cider makers'. We think it is their version of Thatchers Gold. 500ml cans, 5% alcohol and £2.20 for four cans. Compares favourably to Gold which is 4.8% and 440ml. Tastes applely. I like it though Susan is not so keen but she doesn't like Thatchers gold especially if chilled. So try it if you like canned cider.

The song was recorded by Sonny Boy Williamson in 1951 as his first single release on Trumpet Records.[3] Three versions of the song were released as 78 rpm singles. The first version featured Sonny Boy Williamson II on vocals and harmonica, Willie Love on piano, Joe Willie Wilkins on guitar, Elmore James on guitar, and Joe Dyson on drums; the second and third versions had Sonny Boy Williamson II, Willie Love, Henry Reed on double bass, and Joe Dyson.[1]
In 1957, Sonny Boy Williamson re-recorded the song for Checker Records with the title "Born Blind". Accompanying him were Otis Spann on piano, Robert Lockwood and Luther Tucker on guitars, Willie Dixon on bass, and Fred Below on drums.[4]

Rosemary Clooney - Mambo Italiano
"Mambo Italiano" is a popular song written by Bob Merrill in 1954 and recorded by Rosemary Clooney. Merrill actually wrote it on deadline, scribbled hastily on a paper napkin in an Italian restaurant in New York, United States using the wall pay-phone to dictate the melody, rhythm and lyrics to the recording studio pianist, under the aegis of conductor Mitch Miller. The song became a hit for Rosemary, reaching #10 on the charts in the United States and number one in the UK Singles Chart early in 1955.

Here is my mother Doreen when she was newly wed. She was a keen cyclist before she got married and travelled to a lot of distant places. Later in life she was a councillor and a Justice of the Peace (JP) which was awkward for me as a lot of my friends were getting in trouble at that time but I got away with it.

Going to Printing college
When I started work at 17 I was an apprentice which involved going for blocks of about 4 weeks at a time to printing college in Bristol. We stayed in digs with other students. This was in 77 so I was quite lucky of being around for punk gigs. I used to go out every night either with a fellow punk Steve from Trowbridge or Bristol based ex schoolmate Yann. We did all sorts of clubs, cinema and so forth. On one of these nights I met Susan who had come to Bristol for a gig. Eventually we (apprentices) chose to commute to Bristol in a taxi - there were 4 of us from Frome. I do remember it fondly though I didn't do very well as a student!

A lot of the clips of Sonny Boy aren't as good as they could be and it is mostly the backing musicians to blame who are usually taken from the world of jazz. That is probably the case here but it is surprisingly good. Despite the watermark he cooks up a good one.
