Mells Daffodil Festival
Me and Susan watching Bad Detectives with my sister and naphews |
It doesn't seem to be Easter without this event on Easter Monday but it is cancelled these days. I think it got too busy. Years ago it was great you would always bump into old friends as it is between Frome and Radstock. Mells is rather a posh village but in the field next to the village they used to host an English Civil War battle. I didn't take part. Don't know why as it was close. Possibly quality issues. They would have stalls in the streets and vintage vehicles and marquees in the field. Mells was pretty close you could easily cycle it but they used to run free buses from Frome and Radstock. The Bad Detectives always played the beer tent. You would park in a field and pay a few quid. It was the start of the outdoor event social calendar. One year Celia got on the wrong bus and found herself in Frome but managed to get a lift back with Xerxes. Our old next door neighbours used to run the Walled garden at Mells and gave us free pizza one year. Had some good times. The pub the Talbot used to do well too.

Billy Boy Arnold Checkin' it out (1979)
This album on Red Lightnin' I have. It was controversial when it came out as it has Tony McPhee and the Groundhogs on it and it is very rocky. Recorded in London 1977. I liked it. Not one for the purists but certainly interesting. See what you think.
Jesse James Red hot rockin' blues 1958
Just heard on Bernie Keith. Not heard it before well not to my memory.

National Polecat Survey
Polecat wiki |
We are in the midst of the polecat mating season continues until early April. During this time, there is a peak in polecat road casualties, as male polecats are moving around and crossing roads to find females, so this is a good time of year to keep your eyes peeled for polecats on the road.
We are appealing for hair and whisker samples from deceased polecats for research purposes. If you want to collect samples, email us at enquiries@vwt.org.uk for more information.
Easter biscuits
Got our stocks in. From Muffins in the High street Midsomer Norton. They were still warm. Recipe here
THE DEAD DON'T HURT Trailer (2024) Viggo Mortensen
Jean Dinning Bo Diddley 1955
This is mentioned in the Billy Boy Arnold book. Has him playing harp on it. A cover of the song of course but some of the original musicians on it. Read the book for the story.
She moves me Muddy Waters 1952
Here. I am seriously enjoying the Billy Boy Arnold book. I am thinking of when I finish going back through and making a Spotify playlist based on the songs he talks about as this is a harmonica players history of the Chicago blues scene. Just read a chapter on Little Walter and his impact. This song is mentioned as one of Walter's first amplified harmonica songs. I love this song.

My daughter spotted this place in the centre of Bristol. Three pinballs. £11 per a day of free play. Details here
Bristol Rovers Eastville Stadium in the 70s
I used to like football as a lad and I would accompany my Dad to Eastville stadium in the early 70s. He used to go in the Tote end which was where all the hooligans gravitated. I was terrified to be honest but my Dad didn't seem to notice the boot boys in their Clockwork Orange stylings. Eastville used to be a dog track too. You can see the track on this picture.

Louise Brooks
Someone I used to be a bit obsessed in the 80s with was Louise Brooks. There was a book Lulu in Hollywood that was good. Came out 82. Coming up to the centenary of her classic films. She is in the BFI's list of greatest films.
Sex and drugs & rock and roll trailer 2010
Susan watched this film today and enjoyed it. I had my nose in a book as I had seen it before. We weren't big Ian Dury fans which probably means that we could handle a biopic. I only bought one Ian Dury record and that was Sweet Gene Vincent and I used to skip the intro.
Sonny Boy Williamson Polly put the kettle on 1947
Got to the chapter in Billy Boy Arnold's book when Sonny Boy was murdered. Interesting. Billy Boy was and is a real fan. The book is dedicated to Sonny Boy.
The original Sonny Boy who I also like, to confuse you. This one was murdered in 1948 sadly.

Requiem pour un con Serge Gainsbourg 1968
Lovely bass and drums in this. One of my favourite Serge Gainsbourg songs. Scene from Georges Lautner's film Le Pacha, 1968.
France Gall Laisse tomber les filles 1964
The Blues Dream of Billy Boy Arnold
I love libraries. Through them I got this fantastic blues autobiography. I have been wanting to read it for some time. It does not disappoint. He has just met Muddy Waters. Lovely writing style. Lots of interesting insights into the Chicago that we know and love from blues records.

I still Want you Mickey Finn and the Blue Men 1964
This is a dead good slice of British R n B. First heard it on a compilation called the Beat Merchants. Henry had a copy and he lent it to me. Great sleeve.
It's based on a Jimmy Reed type groove. It stands the test of time.

Somerset Wonder of the West
Channel 5 tonight covers the Frome Independent market. Details. The market which is once a month isn't very popular with Frome residents. Thousands of people descend on the town creating parking chaos. It is also reckoned to not benefit the locals as the stall holders are from out of town. Just what I hear. Never been to the market so I am only basing it on hearsay.
Coleford British Legion
Pretty popular in the 60s. Had lots of biggish acts there like Lulu, Them, Pretty Things and Long John Baldrey. They used to run a coach out from Radstock.
Cleo Laine Let's slip away 1960
Just heard on Boss Radio 66. Features in the film Saturday Night and Sunday morning. Wiki. I think she played Coleford British Legion back in the day.

Tanx T Rex 1973
From the BBC news
A steam train that appeared in the Harry Potter films has been suspended in a wrangle over safety regulation.
West Coast Railways (WCR) has been challenging demands for central locking systems to be fitted to carriage doors on its Jacobite service.
WCR said it had suspended the service while it sought an exemption to the rules from rail regulator the Office of Rail and Road (ORR).
The Jacobite and its crossing of the Glenfinnan Viaduct, near Fort William, featured in 2002's Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.
Bobby Parker Watch Your Step 1961
Based on Ray Charles' What I'd Say it influenced the Beatles who adapted the riff for a number of songs. See wiki
Dr Feelgood covered this and we by way of them did it in the Bad Dstectives. .

M E Smith had a habit of having his wife or girlfriend of the time involved onstage. The last one was Elena (or Eleni, Elenor) Smith (nee Poulou), She sings this one and it works. She was active 2002-2016. From the Imperial Wax Solvent LP.
A very enjoyable show. Lots of Lux and Ivy soundbites
We listened to this twice. Very good.
No new show this week, but why not check out this Jungle Juice Classick?!
Kogar's Jungle Juice
Almost THREE HOURS of amazing music from the Lux and Ivy's Favorites series that started nearly 30 years ago! Along the way I'll talk a little bit about the series and how it started while playing (mostly) 45's from the compilations with interview segments from various Lux and Ivy interviews that I've found over the years. All mashed together with horror and exploitation cuts from their favorite movies. Also in there will be a handful of tunes from a possible LAIF volume 18! It's enough to make you a cross eyed gurning sight! Yowwwwwww. Special added bonus the incredibly rare and insane PAPA OO MOW MOW relaxation tape! Something I put together to listen to when I want to get in touch with my inner Purple Knif!
So slap on your wig hat, polish up your Batty Bucks (or cha cha heels, whichever you prefer) and settle in to your favorite leopard print comfy chair and take a trip that will tickle your fissure of rolando!
