Reading the Riot Act

One of the things I am interested in is times in Radstock when the Riot Act was read. It happened in 1817 and other times too. What happened was a specially worded document would be read out in full by a Magistrate or official and if the crowd didn't disperse within an hour they would be guilty of a felony punishable by death. They read it in the movie Peterloo we watched the other day. In 1817 it was enforced in Radstock by the 23rd Lancers and the North Somerset Yeomanry from Frome.  The Riot Act was brought in in 1714 and was repealed in 1967. Wiki on the Riot Act.

The Door Into Summer - The Monkees 1967

Here. Tom Hanks played this on his summer show. It's good.

From the wiki

In 1967, the American rock group The Monkees, recorded the song "The Door into Summer" for their album Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn & Jones Ltd. The song was written by Chip Douglas and Bill Martin and performed by Michael Nesmith (lead vocals) and Micky Dolenz (back-up vocals). In a livestream interview in 2020, Nesmith directly attributes the inspiration for the song to the story about Heinlein's cat looking for the "Door into Summer".[10] The song is about longing and regret for a life based primarily on the accumulation of material things. Other than the title, the song has little to do with the story told in the novel.

Here. We heard this song on Riley and Coe last night. It's good.

Early locomotive at Radstock

From this booklet. Available from Radstock Museum.

Early locomotive

"William Ashman, the resident colliery engineer at Clandown, proved his considerable innovative abilities by designing and building what was probably on of the first workable steam locomotives in this country. The subsequent report in the Bath Herald for August 12 1826 mentioned that he designed:

'...a loco-motive Steam Carriage, for the conveyance of coal from the above collieries to Midford Wharf, which appears to be the lightest and on the most improved principles, of any hitherto invented. Its weight with the cistern full of water in the back part, is 2 tons 3 cwt: and it's velocity, with 9 loaded wagons, 27 cwt each, at a medium, on a level plane, 3½ miles per hour.'

It was placed into service in August 1827 to haul trains between Radstock and Midford but unfortunately the weight of the locomotive was too great for the frail track and this caused its premature withdrawal from service. It was not scrapped but continued in use as a stationary haulage engine at Clandown colliery. Considering that Ashman's locomotive pre-dates Stephenson's Rocket by two years it must have been a great feat at the time and would have made a very interesting and rather unusual sight as it slowly hauled its train of coal out of Radstock.

Peterloo (2018)

We watched this today. Not bad. They could have cut about an hour of it but I am particularly allergic to speechifying in films. I think Susan enjoyed it for a decent job on the settings and costumes but did quip 'at least we aren't going to be tested on this'. I was interested in what happened to Henry Hunt after his arrest but I had to consult the wiki on him. Some pleasant folk music.

1816 Year without a summer

Been reading up on the riots in Radstock in 1817. Part of a general response to the year without a summer. Read about it here

Summer temperatures in Europe were the coldest of any on record between 1766 and 2000,[2] resulting in crop failures and major food shortages across the Northern Hemisphere.[3]

Sally Cary Fairfax 1730-1811

Radstock's most famous resident. Portrait from here

You may think this portrait has nothing to do with Radstock but it's a portrait of Sarah (Sally) Fairfax who was George Washington's first love and she came to live at Writhlington Manor during the American Revolution I think. She is buried in the Church there.

I don't know much about her but I think she used to exchange plants with George Washington. Her wiki is here  but it doesn't mention Writhlington only Bath. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sally_Fairfax

incidentally Writhlington Manor is no longer there. It was sold to an American who had it dismantled to be taken over to be reassembled stateside but World War 2 happened and it stayed in Bath.

I used to be friends with the family who lived at St. Mary's church in Writhlington (converted to a house) and one day we were playing music in their back room and we stopped playing and I said out of the blue 'where's Sarah Fairfax buried then?' Steve answered 'you are standing on her' and I looked down and I was. Just then I got an electric shock. Very disturbing.πŸ˜†

Sarah "Sally" Cary Fairfax, attributed to Samuel Shelly, ca. 1774-1785.

Long Gone Miles - Hello Josephine (Kent) 1969

Here. Just heard on the Wednesday Night Rocking party. Wiki

"I went to Houston for one reason. I went to see Lightnin’ Hopkins. That's what I went for and that's what I did. Lightnin' Hopkins taught me just about everything about blues singing. The first time I ever sang in front of an audience was in 1952 with Lightnin'. The first day I met Lightnin' he named me "Long Gone" … and I've been Long Gone Miles ever since".[2]

Mysterious Somerset and Bristol

Picked up this book today. Has Frome entries but no Radstock.

Mysterious Somerset And Bristol is the next volume in DB Publishing’s Mysterious Counties series. It takes the reader on a fascinating journey through this most beautiful, mystical, enchanting and yet sometimes eerie county, looking at its strange historical curiosities, unexplained mysteries and supernatural phenomena. Covering a wide area – from Exmoor, through the Brendon Hills and the Quantocks, the Mendip Hills and Cheddar Gorge, to the Avon Gorge and southern Bristol – the author has unearthed hundreds of strange tales and anecdotes to capture the imagination and, sometimes, chill the blood. Researched and compiled from archive sources, although up-to-date and including many contemporary first-hand accounts and contributions, Mysterious Somerset and Bristol should prove a satisfying read for the lovers of all that is weird, wonderful and unexplained in this part of the South West. What is behind the ghostly sobbing that plagues an organic farm near North Petherton? Can it be that King Arthur’s ghost still patrols South Cadbury? What are the monstrous creatures that have occasionally been encountered in the Bristol Channel? Does a petrified witch really glare at tourists in the subterranean recesses of Wookey Hole? And what to make of the strange things that have been witnessed in the skies: phantom battles over Lansdown, exploding meteorites over Yeovil, twin suns over Chard and, most recently, a staggering array of missiles, phantom aeroplanes and mysterious UFOs? Within these pages, the reader will discover a Somerset and Bristol rich in folklore, supernatural and paranormal phenomena, myth and legend – a land where every town and village from Minehead to Bath hides a perplexing mystery; Mysterious Somerset And Bristol is the most thought-provoking and comprehensive look at the region’s mysteries in years.

Buying cider in 2008

Film Susan and myself made about Creedies a place where we used to buy cider. Closed now sadly.

The historic inns of Frome

Got this from the library. Very interesting. Over 100 inns. Just read about the Pack Horse which we practiced in. Very rough and rowdy with colliers bringing coal from Radstock and Mells,  their horses grazing in the land subsequently the site of Christchurch church. Lewd women and disorderly conduct. Same as most of the pubs from a cursory look.
