Fountain Inn Buckland Dinham

 So this is where I learned to drink cider. The Fountain Inn at Buckland Dinham. Now a house but it didn't look unlike this photo - no sign. There was no bar - they used to go to a room for the drinks. Mainly cider. I remember the experience well. I was about 14. Cider was about 10p and they did cheese and raw onion rolls for about 15p.  I had friends who lived in the village and they didn't refuse to serve you alcohol .Shove ha'penny was played there. We used to cycle out and on the way back would spew. Landlord was called Vic. I think his father Charlie ran it before him. Locals called it Charlie's.  Landlady was Audrey.

Titanic's last photo

 

This picture is interesting to me as it is taken at Fennell's Bay County Cork. This was a place Susan's Gran was from - she lived in a place called Liner View as you could see the big ships queuing up. Visited it many times.  Susan's Gran Florence from Ireland was lovely. She lived in Frome in later years and had some great memories of the Irish Civil War and all the ships and so forth from the time.  Titanic visited Queenstown County Cork in its last port of call before the Atlantic.

 From the original half hour 16mm b/w film made by Steve and Ronnog Seaberg and Marshall Matson featuring blues musician, J.B. Lenoir, playing and singing "Grandma's Advice" in his living room on Dante Street on Chicago's South Side. Meant for swedissh television writer Ronnog Seaberg translates it into Swedish. The film was never used in Sweden and remained in the Seaberg's home for almost forty years until it was used by Wim Wenders' in The Soul of a Man in 2003. It was finally shown in Sweden at the Gothenburg Film Festival in January 2004. The New Yorker called it "the film within the film".

The B-52's - Deadbeat Club 1990

 "Deadbeat Club" is a song by the B-52's. The song is about the band's early days in Athens when they would hang around in cafes drinking coffee. Because they didn't work or do anything, their parents nicknamed them "Deadbeats".

Sonny Boy Williamson II Eyesight To The Blind (1951)

 I remember the joy I felt when I finally got to hear this. In the old days it was hard to hear things that you wanted to - you could order a record - out of a big book - you could maybe ask a record shop to play a song - which I used to do at Milsom's in Bath as they had a listening booth and stocked blues albums. You could send off mail order which I used to do or maybe you could hear it on the radio but it was not easy like today.

Theobold Arms Nunney Catch Frome

 

An occasional series on local pubs. I think this is closed now. The road layout changed which may have been a feature. Listed building 17th century updated in the 19th. I played there with the Bad Detectives in the skittle alley in about 1978 and I remember seeing a ferret hutch out the back. Lots of the punters were Romany and really danced when we did an Elvis song so we did all the Elvis ones we knew. It was close enough to Frome to enable people to walk out from Frome. We had a great time there.

 A family favourite of ours.  Something you won't hear on the Radio. We were on a compilation with this song that's how we know it (Messthetics). But it is brilliant. Give it a spin if you don't know it.

Ludella - JIMMY ROGERS and his Trio (Chess 1435) 78rpm 1950

 Classic Chicago blues with Little Walter on harp. We used to have African clawed frogs as pets in the 80s and one was called Ludella after this song. This record has lovely bass on it - blues of this type needs a stand up bass.

 This film I have not seen before but you have probably seen it but if not then you are in luck. The low-budget promotional video for "Lazy Sunday" was filmed at Kenney Jones 's parents' home on Havering Street in Stepney, east London.Got to number 2.

So I don't know the exact date of this - 40 years ago. Probably the summer. It was a Battle of the Bands for local what's on guide Out West and I remember we sent a single but I cant be sure of the date. It's an accurate capture of the look of us at the time. I remember we had to pay something like £20 to get a video film of the show at the Granary Bristol. We didn't wait around to hear who won - we didn't bring a load of fans like the other bands had. I remember an argument with Andy during the soundcheck but it got resolved quickly. It was literally just us and a driver so we were a little tense. It was the only time this line up did a gig.

They could have been big. Saw them a couple of times but they didn't really have an audience. They got asked to play the Blitz club by Rusty Egan but their manager turned it down.
