Here. Saturday Night 🌙selection. Hard to believe this is 30 years old. Kind of reminds me of Glastonbury a bit too. Wiki

King Coal | Official Trailer | POV | PBS

Watch trailer here

A lyrical tapestry of a place and people, King Coal meditates on the complex history and future of the coal industry, the communities it has shaped, and the myths it has created. The film reshapes the boundaries of documentary filmmaking and transcends time and place, untangling the pain from the beauty, and illuminating the innately human capacity for imagination and change.

King Coal will make its national broadcast premiere on the award-winning PBS television series POV on Monday, June 24, 2024, at 10pmET/9C (check local listings) on PBS, pbs.org, and the PBS App.

Bruton Somerset

This Somerset town of a few thousand people was dubbed by Vogue as the new Notting Hill. I went to school there so I know it as it was in the 70s. Local hard man was called Rocky Stone. Pic from here

Blowzabella Death in a Fen/Bruton Town/Our Captain Cried 1988

Wiki. Mike Reynolds just played this band. Mike knew one of the hurdy-gurdy players in the English Civil War Society.

From a Richer Dust. Here. A folk band that we liked. Saw them at the Bridgwater Arts Centre in about 1988.

Do the Clam Elvis 1965

Grab your barefoot baby by the hand. From Girl Happy.

Here. Brilliant clip and song. Wiki. Written by Dolores Fuller.

Cavegirl and the Neandergals

See them playing Psycho Bitch in Leeds a few weeks ago here This album is out on Western Star in a couple of weeks. We tuned into Bernie Keith this morning to hear an interview with Sunshine Cave (her real name)  the singer and stand up bassist. They are getting a lot of favourable interest. Recorded at the Paulton (Western Star are our friendly local label). On 10 inch vinyl. Music is rockabilly with a kick. Visually they are aiming for One Million Years B.C.. So they said. Good luck with the record.

Cruiser's Creek the Fall (extended version) 1985

One of their best 45s. Always like hearing this.

There's a party going down around here

Cruiser's creek now
Watch the shirt-tails flapping in the wind
Sidewalk running
See the people holding from the back
Hat-boaters tilting
There's a party going on around here
Cruiser's creek now
Cruiser's creek yeah
Cruiser's creek

Jubilee Four - Cheek to Cheek Elvis Presley Viva Las Vegas 1964

From Viva Las Vegas

The Swinger (1966)

Watched this movie today. It's OK. I like Ann-Margret but it wasn't brilliant. A vehicle for her skills apparently it is from a trilogy of vehicles which includes Vive Las Vegas and Bye Bye Birdie. Wiki

Beyond The Valley of The Dolls (1970) Come with The Gentle People by The Carrie Nations

For all of the people heading to Glastonbury.

Glastonbury gates open.

Are you going? Where we used to live used to go really quiet over the Glastonbury weekend as a lot of people would go down. We only went once in 92 and finished up camping with our neighbours in the Green Field. Was hot and drinks were expensive. I took a folding bike and enjoyed cycling around the site in the morning before people woke up. Saw the Fall. And the Orb. Wasn't in a rush to repeat it - it was a rich man's game. Morrissey was on the bill but cancelled. There were lots of Morrisey lookalikes walking about.

He is coming. NOSFERATU. A Robert Eggers picture. Only in theaters this Christmas. Robert Eggers’ NOSFERATU is a gothic tale of obsession between a haunted young woman and the terrifying vampire infatuated with her, causing untold horror in its wake.

The KKK took my baby away the Ramones 1981

When the children were young we used to have a cassette of Ramonesmania in the car. This one was on it. Watch here

Most of the later songs which we didn't know we're rubbish but this track was good. The kids did grow up to like the Ramones naturally.

Clothing and Landscape by Rachel Worth

 Recommended by Anthony L. Dawson.

At the beginning of the Victorian period, most of England's population lived in the countryside; by its end, the balance had tipped towards living in urban and suburban spaces. In the context of this rapidly changing world, Rachel Worth explores the ways in which the clothing of the rural working classes was represented visually in paintings and photographs and by the literary sources of documentary, autobiography and fiction, as well as by the particular pattern of survival and collection by museums of garments of rural provenance. Rachel Worth explores ways in which clothing and how it is represented throws light on wider social and cultural aspects of society, as well as how 'traditional' styles of dress, like men's smock-frocks or women's sun-bonnets, came to be replaced by 'fashion'. Her compelling study, with black & white and colour illustrations, both adds a broader dimension to the history of dress by considering it within the social and cultural context of its time and discusses how clothing enriches our understanding of the social history of the Victorian peri

Battle of the Beanfield 1985

This happened in June 85. Wiki I remember sitting in my parents' garden with our baby in the sun and my Mum (who was a Justice of the Peace) knew there was a big police operation going on and was listening on the Police radio. Vans and vans of police went by. Our friend Duncan was there and was arrested. He was at that time part of the traveller community.

Roger & the Gypsies Pass the Hatchet 1966

 Lovely bass on this.

The Fall Lay of the Land 1984 OGWT

Album on Spotify released October 84

Here. TV was November 40 years ago. This was a time when I wasn't very interested in punk music but I remember Duncan raving about this performance. The Wiki on the album claims the chanting is derived from the Quatermass Conclusion. I remember this show. Quatermass is set in a near future in which large numbers of young people are joining a cult known as the Planet People who gather at prehistoric sites, believing they will be transported to a better life on another planet.

Lay

This beautiful tree
Boo hoo
Give up living

They give in
On The Buses, up the stair
By the television

What's the lie of the land
My son

Men without hats Safety Dance 1982

This song I completely missed when it came out. We discovered it when it was introduced to us by our hosts when we visited Denmark. These young Goths loved it and we had to agree. Filmed in Wiltshire (not too far away from here) the video was. Hit in 83. Apparently written after being thrown out of a club for pogoing.

Earliest photo of Radstock

Mining was already established by the 1860s when this photo was taken. This is before the railways came. In the distance you can see the Waldegrave arms which is still there but renamed the Radstock hotel.

A fine smock

Before mining started in Radstock in 1763 it was a typical Mendip village with sheep being farmed. We have a bridge called sheep wash bridge from those times.

"Haymakers" by George Stubbs, c. 1785.

No smocks. A bit early for Haymaking. I did it once as a lad. Sweaty work. Moving haybales about into a trailer then into a barn.

Clifton House Mystery (1978)

See my post on the Bristol Riot here

Wiki Watch it here (it's about 2:15.02)

This is an HTV children's ghost story which has a connection with the Bristol riots of 1831. A ghost based on  Thomas Brereton who commanded the King's forces during the riot and was made a scapegoat and killed himself during the court martial.

Just ordered this from the library.
