Standells book
This looks interesting. The Standells were fantastic.Listen to their best here in Spotify
A wild ride with keyboardist, lead singer/writer and founding member of the Standells, Larry Tamblyn.
A "fly on the wall" view of the inner workings of this very successful, and influential Rock Group. Larry takes you back to the beginning, giving you an intimate look at his early life growing up in a show business family.
He vividly recalls a tour with the Rolling Stones, discusses the ups and downs of the music business, and his acquaintance with a veritable who's who of iconic figures in the music business. Larry Tamblyn and The Standells were one of the chief architects of this seminal form of Rock & Roll. Music played by garage-bands is music in its purest. - Johnny Echols: Co-founder, and lead guitarist in the group... LOVE
Larry Tamblyn takes you on journey that you will never forget. Larry’s book recounts in detail his exciting life and career. From the beginnings of his seminal garage band, the Standells, Larry provides a well-documented tale of the life of a rock star in a wild and crazy time. His use of humor, chaos and sadness brings to light an understanding of that era. Thankfully, Larry has kept the Standells’ name alive for Rock ‘n Roll history. The reader will never be bored, as one takes in the whole arc of his amazing story.” - Russ Tamblyn, star of “West Side Story” and “Seven Brides for Seven Brothers”

Celia got us this book. It's very interesting. Three of my uncles were pub landlords so I am interested anyway. Lots of colour pics. Nice page on cider houses.

Let it Rock
Let It Rock from the wiki
edit
Trevor Myles (who ran Paradise Garage), relinquished the entire premises to McLaren and Casey in November 1971. They renamed the shop Let It Rock with stock including second-hand and new Teddy Boy clothes designed by McLaren's school teacher girlfriend Vivienne Westwood.[5] The shop-front corrugated iron frontage was painted black with the name pasted in pink lettering. The interior was given period detail, such as "Odeon" wallpaper and Festival of Britain trinkets, furnished in the style of a 1950s living room.[4]
Bespoke tailored drape jackets, skin-tight trousers and thick-soled "brothel creepers" shoes were the mainstays of stock retailed under the label. Let It Rock was soon covered in the London Evening Standard.[citation needed]
King's Road book
This looks interesting. We had some fun times on the Kong's Road. In the punk era.
The King's Road in Chelsea was at the epicentre of not one, but two worldwide cultural shifts. In the mid-sixties, it became a focal point and shop window for the new ‘swinging’ London, encompassing music, theatre, the visual arts, fashion and much more. It remained at the forefront of developing trends throughout the following decade until it became the breeding-ground for UK punk rock, helping inspire youthful rebellion the world over. In short, it was the place to be.
In the time between the formation of the Rolling Stones and the demise of the Sex Pistols, the King’s Road had the attention of the world. Just how this came to be is a classic rise-and-fall story of satisfaction and sedition, featuring
Beatles Hey Bulldog 1968
I think this is the best song on the Yellow Submarine album. Lovely bass on it.
Summer Wine Nancy Sinatra and Lee Hazlewood 1967 Ed Sullivan show
I picked up this album from a junk shop before it was fashionable.
Ralph Mitchard
Me when I used to sing and play harmonica with the Bad Detectives. This is about 1979. This night was pretty wild with a door being kicked in and the police getting beat up. Maybe you remember it? Henry remembered this "That's all true the police turned up when the door got broken and the mate we had running the door refused to let them in unless they paid the 50p entry and it all kicked off."

Bulldog The Shangri-Las 1965
Great Leiber and Stoller song. Was a b-side but I loved it. Was an influence on the later Terraplanes sound.

Guss and crook
Have written about this before. A device used by carting boys. My Grandfather Has fuss and crook scars The last pit to use them was Braysdown.
As late as 13th February 1926, at Ludlow's pit, an employee was killed wearing the Fuss and crook, the first fatal accident there since 1910. The examiner said "the men will use their guss. They like them like bread and cheese". Killed in a coal pit 2

Killed in a Coal pit 2
Got this booklet from the library. Full of entries like the below piece
John Gregory (21) of Fairfield was winning coal at Writhlington when a large stone fell from the roof and crushed him to death. His younger brother was close by and was also injured but his body mainly bore the weight of the stone and saved his brother's life. He was a useful member of the Bath Road Primitive Church and was shortly to be married. (Bristol Evening News 20 June 1881)

Here. Have a look at the wiki. The song begins with a Native American-like chant and reflects Stallings' ancestry.[2]
John Mitchard 1970 election
This was when my Dad - John Mitchard from Radstock though we were living in Frome then - contested the North Somerset constituency. I am on the left of the picture. I can remember that campaign well, we had an office on Wells hill up from the Shambles, and I remember driving around the constituency. Occasionally we would see the sitting MP Paul Dean doing the rounds too in his Land Rover. We went to some public meetings at Victoria Hall and places like that and I am pretty sure we went to Lower Writhlington colliery to canvas the workers coming out. I was very young and I was certain we were going to win - everyone seemed on our side but it was not to be but it was great fun. Met some great people and had our moment in the spotlight

Hot wire my heart Crime 1976
Stunning debut. I didn't hear this at the time. I got to hear of Crime and see pictures of them and read about them but didn't hear them until later. About 78 I first heard of them.

Vote Ralph Mitchard
When I gave up music in about 84 I gravitated towards politics. I stood in Frome for a number of elections around 1985. My father was a Labour politician so I think I was trying to emulate him. I was very fired up at that time (miner's strike etc) but I gave up and got involved in reenactment. After all I already had a beard!😄

Illustration of a farmer's boy from Picturesque Representations of the Dress and Manners of the English(1814) by William Alexander (1767-1816). Original from The New York Public Library. Digitally enhanced by rawpixel.
This figure may be said rather to represent the usual dress of the farmers' servants in the southern parts of the kingdom. The frock, which he wears over his other clothes, is made of coarse linen, much in the same form as a shirt, except that the front is close, and usually stitched or plaited in a fanciful manner, as are also the shoulders aud back part of the neck. The small keg, seen on the ground, contains his beverage, when employed in the fields, and his provisions he carries in a wallet. These labourers are, in general, a hardy, robust class of men, and furnish the best soldiers in our armies. It may be observed here, that the peasantry and farmers' servants in the southern counties of England are far behind their brethren in the more northern parts both in the cleanness and neatness of their dress.A milk maid |
Lower Writhlington colliery 1975
This colour slide is on ebay. Demonstrates the juxtaposition of the pastoral and the industrial that characterises the Somerset coalfield. Hardly a sign it is there now. Some if you look but in general no signs.

Terraplanes Evil Going On Bristol Granary 1981
This was a battle of the bands we did and if you.paid I think 25 quid they presented you with a video. But we only had the one copy and we didn't have the resources to copy it so we didn't send it to Peel etcetra which maybe we should have done. Possibly deep down we were a little embarrassed by it. Or shy.

''And if I had a million dollars I'd give every dime just to hear you call me daddy one more time".
I believe this was a B-side to Little by Little. Is very good. Give it a spin. Earl Hooker on guitar. B.B. King said of Earl Hooker "to me he is the best of modern guitarists. Period. With the slide he was the best. It was nobody else like him, he was just one of a kind".[3]

Zerox Machine
An immersive journey through the vibrant history of British punk and its fanzines.
Zerox Machine is an immersive journey through the vibrant history of British punk and its associated fanzines from 1976 to 1988. Drawing on an extensive range of previously unpublished materials sourced from private collections across the UK, Matthew Worley describes and analyses this transformative era, providing an intimate glimpse into the hopes and anxieties that shaped a generation.
Far more than a showcase of covers, this book examines the fanzines themselves, offering a rich tapestry of first-hand accounts, personal stories and subcultural reflections. Through meticulous research and insightful analysis, Matthew Worley captures the spirit and essence of British youth culture, not only shedding new light on a pivotal movement in music history but crafting a unique alternative history of Britain in the 1970s and ’80s.
