The Terraplanes Evil Going On 1981

Recorded today (30th) 40 years ago. Produced by Marcus Greening as he had a car and none of us could drive but he did a good job on the sound. Got a bank loan to pay for the pressing. Download it for £1 here

Dexy´s Midnight Runners - Celtic Soul Brothers 1983

What did you think of Dexys? I sort of liked them - not enough to go see them but I bought some of their records. I certainly didn't follow their fashion ideas but I liked the idea of a package or concept like you got with them. This is one of my favourites.

BETTY EVERETT - TELL ME, DARLING - COBRA 1958

Automne Zingg on PKM

We met Automne in 2011 when her band supported us in Portland. Impressive out put.  Very talented.

'Automne Zingg is an artistic force. The New York City-based visual artist creates funny, surreal, psychedelic portraits and images, but she’s also an author, publishing recipe books starring the Ramones, Nick Cave, Morrissey and others. But, first and foremost, she’s a musician, writing and recording songs under the name Lacey Spacecake. Amy Haben uncovers all of the various strands in an interview with Automne Zingg for PKM.'

Ike and Tina Turner - A Fool in Love

Ike & Tina Turner and the Ikettes perform 'A Fool in Love' on "Hollywood A-Go Go" in 1965.

I would have loved to see Ike and Tina at around this time. They did play the Bath Pavilion but I was just a toddler.

Cider - from Somerset 2008

A film Susan and I made of a place that is no longer going so we were glad to have documented it.

Buying cider from a farm in North-east Somerset. Music 'Cider' by Social Security a punk band from the 70s who were based in Bristol (and were great). We also buy a lump of tasty cheddar cheese.

Drink Up Thy Zider (1967)

Susan and myself have been to quite a few places where cider is made and had a go ourselves with not bad results but one of our friends is a real expert and has all the equipment - barrels presses all very much a commitment. Anyway here is the great Adge Cutler a man loved in this region. I saw them live at about this time at a firework display in Frome.

US on a cider safari

Lidls new cider 'Compton Orchard'

Lidls have a new cider. 'Made in Somerset by family cider makers'. We think it is their version of Thatchers Gold. 500ml cans, 5% alcohol and £2.20 for four cans. Compares favourably to Gold which is 4.8% and 440ml. Tastes applely. I like it though Susan is not so keen but she doesn't like Thatchers gold especially if chilled. So try it if you like canned cider.

1960 Coasters - Besame Mucho (Pt 1)

One of my favourite Coasters songs is a cover of a 20 year old hit. But it is great.

Calling All Blues - The Chief, Profile & USA Recordings 1957-1963 - Junior Wells

 Excellent album.

Sonny Boy Williamson II Eyesight To The Blind (1951)

From the wiki . The best place to start with a Sonny Boy collection.

The song was recorded by Sonny Boy Williamson in 1951 as his first single release on Trumpet Records.[3] Three versions of the song were released as 78 rpm singles. The first version featured Sonny Boy Williamson II on vocals and harmonica, Willie Love on piano, Joe Willie Wilkins on guitar, Elmore James on guitar, and Joe Dyson on drums; the second and third versions had Sonny Boy Williamson II, Willie Love, Henry Reed on double bass, and Joe Dyson.[1]

In 1957, Sonny Boy Williamson re-recorded the song for Checker Records with the title "Born Blind". Accompanying him were Otis Spann on piano, Robert Lockwood and Luther Tucker on guitars, Willie Dixon on bass, and Fred Below on drums.[4]

I made a Playlist with his great session moments

Who Do You Love? Bo Diddley 1956

Probably Jody Williams' most famous guitar work is on this track by Bo Diddley. It is sublime.

Jody Williams - 2001 - Return Of A Legend

So as I mentioned below Jody Williams gave up music to be a Xerox repair man but in 2000 he went to a concert by Robert Jr Lockwood and got the bug again and got his guitar out from under the bed. This is his come back album.

Jody Williams - Lucky Lou 1957

Jody Williams was one of the great guitarists - he played with everybody but gave up music for a long while fed up with plagiarism.

Rosemary Clooney - Mambo Italiano

"Mambo Italiano" is a popular song written by Bob Merrill in 1954 and recorded by Rosemary Clooney. Merrill actually wrote it on deadline, scribbled hastily on a paper napkin in an Italian restaurant in New York, United States using the wall pay-phone to dictate the melody, rhythm and lyrics to the recording studio pianist, under the aegis of conductor Mitch Miller. The song became a hit for Rosemary, reaching #10 on the charts in the United States and number one in the UK Singles Chart early in 1955.

Radstock strike photos

Part of my loving the film Germinal is that Radstock has a strong history of strikes being a mining town (and Midsomer-Norton). Here are a couple of good photos.

TYRANNOSAURUS REX " Debora " 1968

Susan is a Marc Bolan fan since she was a youth. This is a good clip.  Susan used to have the My People were fair l.p. on Regal Zonophone.  She was babysitting for some ex-Hippies and they said she could have it.

Germinal 1993

My favourite Depardieu movie is this one - an epic drama about a miner's strike. It is worth tracking down if you can. We got ours from our son who bought us a box set of films just to get Germinal though it is up now on Youtube movies

THE SEARCHERS - WOW WOW BABY [Class 223] 1958

Creation Stories | Official Trailer | Sky Cinema

Not an Alan McGee fan but Mickey Bradley just spoke about this and I do like musical biopics.

Going to Printing college

When I started work at 17 I was an apprentice which involved going for blocks of about 4 weeks at a time to printing college in Bristol. We stayed in digs with other students. This was in 77 so I was quite lucky of being around for punk gigs. I used to go out every night either with a fellow punk Steve from Trowbridge or Bristol based ex schoolmate Yann. We did all sorts of clubs, cinema and so forth. On one of these nights I met Susan who had come to Bristol for a gig. Eventually we (apprentices) chose to commute to Bristol  in a taxi - there were 4 of us from Frome. I do remember it fondly though I didn't do very well as a student!

Sonny Boy Williamson- "Don't Start Me To Talking/Coming Home To You Baby" 1963

A lot of the clips of Sonny Boy aren't as good as they could be and it is mostly the backing musicians to blame who are usually taken from the world of jazz. That is probably the case here but it is surprisingly good. Despite the watermark he cooks up a good one.

Eddie Boyd - Five Long Years

The Pop Group - Where There's a Will There's a Way 1980

This band are from Bristol.

Van Morrison - Natalia 1978

The Jesus And Mary Chain - Sometimes Always (Official Music Video) 1994

Usually I like the early stuff that a band does - you know - the first two LPs but with the Jesus and Mary Chain I find their early stuff pretty poor but felt they got better as they went along.
