George Baker (12)
The accident took place at Hayeswood pit in Timsbury, the property of S. Samborne esq. The boy's duty was to stand at the bottom of the shaft with an adult and receive the coal before it was Sent up to the surface. On this occasion the man was absent. For some unknown reason the boy left his place and went along the incline where he was met by the loaded tram coming up. He tried to cling to the eighteen inches of space between the tram and the road but sadly someone had allowed a piece of coal to project and it struck him in the head, knocking him down. The wheels of the tram passed over his thigh. The leg was later amputated under chloroform but he died of shock. (BGa 9.9.1852) from Killed in a Coalpit 2
