The artist Henry Perlee Parker is credited with being the first artist to submit a true mining picture to the Royal Academy, in 1836. Entitled 'Pitmen at Play', Parker’s depiction of a north-eastern colliery is typical of his social-realist paintings and is one of a series that he painted on this theme.
