 A couple of Frome legends have passed away recently. Bob Hinton who was a Youth leader in the 70s. He was very encouraging when we started playing to practice in the Youth Wing.

Also PC Tom Berryman local police officer of Frome from the 50s. He is associated with the clip round the ear policing of the old days. Both gentlemen will be missed.

 Nostalgia. I was told children born into farming families used to have these so they could learn about farming. I had them. Wasn't in a farming family but in Frome people were.

Jake Stratton-Kent

 Passed away sadly about 18 months ago. I knew him when he lived in Frome introduced by Duncan. I didn't know about his magical practices I shared common interests like wargaming rock'n'roll and punk. When I knew him he was a reenactor of the Middle Ages British Plate Armour society. We were friends on Facebook but I admit I didn't understand most of his posts. Here is what Goodreads said about him.

Jake Stratton-Kent has been a goetic magician since 1972, making more than forty years of continuous goetic practice. His practical work integrates the magical papyri, italo-french grimoires in particular the Grimorium Verum and African traditional religions with a focus on Quimbanda and magia negra. His interest in magic spans the ancient, medieval, renaissance, and modern as well as stretching from the West to the Middle East and crucially, the New World. His scholarly approach is backed with a personal relationship with the spirits.

The Crown Frome

 In Frome town centre. Closed now but back in the day was very popular. It had a pinball in the back bar. Do you remember what you were doing when Charles married Lady Di? I do. Playing the Crown with the Bad Detectives. During the day. Everyone had the day off. My parents had my Granny over to watch the telly. 

South Parade Club Frome

 We played here. They were very resistant to the noise we made. Can you turn the drums down? Was one question they asked a number of times. We offered to give up but they didn't want us to leave as we had drawn a decent crowd but they were so against the noise. Funny thing about it was when we bought a terraced house in Frome guess who was our next door neighbour? Only the man from the the South Parade club! We had noise issues with him there too. Imagine the look on his face when we moved in.

Bad Detectives at the Cellar Bar Taunton.

 Occasionally I reminisce about gigs we did. This was a favourite of the late Jake Stratton-Kent who lived in Frome at the time.

So in about 1979 I was still singing and blowing harp for the Bad Detectives whenever they got gigs. We got asked to play the Cellar bar in Taunton which is about 30 miles away from Frome. I had the idea of hiring a coach and filling it up with our Frome friends. This was done without any knowledge of what the Cellar bar was like. We got down and set up the kit and it became apparent that this was a biker hangout. Not many people there initially but we did notice that the girls were drinking pints something we had not seen before. 

We started our set and we started getting jeers from the small crowd. At first I was winding the small crowd saying things like 'this is by Led Zeppelin. Oh no it's not and so on. Then suddenly an additional load of bikers turned up. Big blokes who I later found out they all worked for Taunton meat haulage - they were big. We were just into the song Psychotic reaction and all hell was let loose. Someone got hurled through the air crashing into the drum kit and all over people were fighting. I said to everyone nearby to grab some kit and get outside. This was when we realised we had to ascend stairs to get out and we had a job of reaching the green outside. Outside we piled up the kit. The bikers seemed to not follow us outside they were content to chase us out. So we had to wait for the coach - the police came to guard us and it transpired someone had been stabbed though not seriously. We managed to get home all right with no losses of equipment. But ever after that we have always been hesitant in bringing a crowd to gigs. Some gigs expect you to provide an audience of friends but we have never done it. Once at a gig in London we got asked 'where are all your friends?' We used this as a title for a CD we did.

 In the 60s I was mad about Batman. Had the Corgi Batmobile. As everyone did. I had a home made cloak that my parents made me out of a nylon mac. Woolworths did these figures which I had but I can't find it online. Colouring books too.

Theobald Arms Nunney

 Closed now. We played there back around 77. I remember there were ferrets in hutches there. Was popular with Romas. When we played there we discovered they loved Elvis and any Elvis song would result in frenzied dancing so we played all we knew. A proper Nunney Saturday night. Nunney Catch is within walking distance of Frome so lots of Frome people came out so happy days.

Storks at Aarhus Denmark

 We did a gig in Aarhus Denmark. Read about it here. My parents before we went showed us pictures from when they went there and there were loads of storks on the rooftops. When we got there we asked our hosts about storks. They said there wasn't any and there has never been storks there. We found out the frog population had crashed and got rid of the storks. 

Summer days/Drumbeat for Baby Weekend 1982

Wiki here. New label Jazz. Who remembers this -from about 1982? Maybe you haven't heard this jazz-tinged bit of post punk loveliness before. An offshoot of Young Marble Giants this band did well but maybe not as well as it should have done. Funny now hearing it it conjures up images and feelings from around the time - the nostalgia of young and carefree times. I think at the time I used to play the lp when I was in a bright and breezy frame of mind...which was more frequent than now when I am mostly in curmudgeon mode.

Booze cruise to Bruges

 Back in 79 we went on a booze cruise to Belgium. From Harwich. You didn't need a full passport you just got a photo taken and then you filled in your details on a card and that was it. As part of the deal you would also get a bottle of vodka and a carton of cigarettes. We went to Bruges and went round the canals and of course got drunk on Belgian beer. It was quite tiring but fun.
