Radstock Library the oldest in the region

 BANES are celebrating 100 years of the Bath library. There is a page they have put together about it. This is what they said about Radstock. 

Radstock is the oldest public lending library in what is now Bath and North East Somerset. It began life in 1897 as a reading room and library in the newly built Victoria Hall, and was made a public library under the Libraries Acts on 11th July 1904.

Control of expenditure on stock was very tight – in 1910 Radstock Council gave the library special permission to buy the complete works of Dickens, which was seen as an important but extravagant purchase.

Radstock was the main library for the area and in 1973 moved into a purpose-designed, architectural award-winning building, where it has stayed ever since.

Tea shortage in the U.K.

 We like our tea. But there is a shortage. First world problem. We may have to scour around. Our usual brew is sold out and the one we liked ok is now not on the shelves. Possibly about two days of tea left.

The Burryman

 Here. My brother sent this. Old tradition.

Every year on the second Friday in August, a man emerges from the Staghead pub in South Queensferry, covered head to toe in flower seeds and ready to walk nine miles while being given whisky by the locals.

Known as Burryman's Day, the ritual dates back around 400 years and is thought to bring good luck.

Jean de Florette (1986)

 

We watched this film today. After making Susan watch Red Dawn I thought I would choose something more up her street. We have this and the follow up Manon Des Sources in a Claude Berri box set that our son bought us. We wanted Germinal but it was cheaper to buy the box rather than buy singulary. But they are great films. Almost too good. It is quite depressing watching the villainous Soubeyrans do their evil deeds, it borders on the unwatchable as they, posing as friends, make their plans. But great cinema.

 Here. We tried to cover this for an album of Stones covers but we couldn't pull it off. A b-side. A great song. Written for Marianne Faithfull I believe.

This is a great song. Another hippy band I like. Maybe I am a hippy? Saw Sky Saxon at the Thekla Bristol with Dave Mackay. It was a great night. He wasn't hitting the notes really more like mumbling the words but we didn't care. It was the Seeds! Watch them doing Satisfy You at the Thekla here

The Leather Boys (1964) trailer

This Sydney J Furie film is a must-see. Dealing with the difficult subject of marriage and homosexuality with Dudley Sutton in one of his many camp roles which he graced the British screen with. Some good sections on the ton-up scene and the Ace café.

 I attended this school for two years. A boy's Grammar School. They had boarders there but not me. Got caned twice. Also my band played there and got paid £13.

 We watched this today in a 40th anniversary celebration. Susan doesn't remember watching it before. I don't endorse the politics but as a work of 80s schlock I like it. Really needs to be watched on VHS. Official trailer here. Remade in 2012 but with China as the bad guys.

BBC Look Stranger 1970 Glastonbury in the age of aquarius

Glastonbury Tor as a place of significant and powerful magnetism is celebrated in this film which traces a line from the dawn of the Christian era through to the hippies making pilgrimages there at the time. We hear from local resident John Shelly, a potter who lives nearby who attests to its spiritual power and architect Keith Critchlow who talks about his own research into the site.  Been thinking about juke boxes. Much missed these days. A good juke box could make a pub great. I remember all the juke boxes in Frome and what they had. All vinyl of course. When we had records out we put them on Juke boxes, Nigel at his college for example. Our single was on the Sun Inn juke box but we didn't put it there. It used to get played when we were in there which was embarrassing.

1991: The Year Punk Broke, released theatrically in 1992, is a documentary directed by Dave Markey,^[1][2] featuring American alternative rock band Sonic Youth on tour in Europe in 1991. While Sonic Youth is the focus of the documentary, the film also gives attention to Nirvana, Dinosaur Jr., Babes in Toyland, Gumball and The Ramones.^[3] Also featured in the film are Mark Arm, Dan Peters and Matt Lukin of Mudhoney, and roadie Joe Cole, who was murdered in a robbery three months after the tour ended. The film is dedicated to Cole.^[4]

I don't really know much about this. I wasn't really interested in music in them days. I knew Sonic Youth from their collaboration with Richard Hell.
