Chris Howell Somerset author

We have a lot of books by him. He did a lot of books on Somerset history. A lot of them had him interviewing elderly residents and placing their comments next to old photos. He was a local schoolteacher. His book No Thankful Village is probably his most famous book getting national interest. (A thankful village is one who lost no casualties in the Great War). He came to our house once to deliver a book and we had a nice chat. This is just a few of his books.

Deer Leap by Bob Bruton Photography

This is a spot on the Mendips overlooking Somerset. Near Priddy. Called deer leap as there was a ditch there to prevent deer leaving the Royal Forest. There are two standing stones nearby.

Theobald Arms Nunney

Loved the painting. Played there as a teen. Clientele were mainly Romani who loved Elvis so we played loads of his stuff and they danced up a storm. Had ferrets out the back, probably the first time I encountered one.

Foxcote Somerset (pronounced Fosscutt)

 Some stuff on the village.

Foxcote Pit
Church of St James The Less, Foxcote - Wikipedia

Fair Maids of Foscott. In 1668 Samuel Pepys visited Norton St Philip

''At Philips-Norton I walked to [the Church](https://www.pepysdiary.com/encyclopedia/14144/), and there saw a very ancient tomb of some Knight Templar, I think; and here saw the tombstone whereon there were only two heads cut, which, the story goes, and credibly, were two sisters, called the Fair Maids of Foscott, that had two bodies upward and one belly, and there lie buried. Dunkerton Hill

 From the Somerset Coalfield wiki.

Wagonloads of coal being hauled up Dunkerton Hill in the 1850s. Fanny Mayne, writing in The True Briton, complained of this unpleasant traffic,[22] "It is a very long hill, nearly two miles long, and up it are dragged nearly all the carts, waggons, and "noddies", loaded with coal, which supply Bath and its environs with that very necessary comfort, or comfortable necessary. A sad sight is Dunkerton Hill!"

Priddy Fire

Huge grass fire in Somerset village devastates woodland

A huge grass fire devastated over 400m of woodland in a Somerset village on Friday night.

Devon and Somerset Police were called to Stock Hill Woods in Priddy at 5.30pm where three to four-hundred metres of grassland was set ablaze.

Crews from Castle Cary Fire Station attended the incident using beaters and water jets from a local source to put out the fire.

2000: Rode Bird Gardens home video VHS

We were talking about Rode Bird Gardens near Frome and I thought I would look on Youtube to see if there was anything and found this. Our African clawed frog ended up in the reptile house there. Kids loved going there.
