Action Man Ferret Scout car

When we used to breed ferrets I planned to do this pic 1/6 scale ferret car and put a ferret in it and then see what Google delivered. We don't breed ferrets any more which with this summer's heat we weren't sorry as ferrets don't like hot and all manner of creating shade is necessary. This is AI.

Theobald Arms Nunney

Loved the painting. Played there as a teen. Clientele were mainly Romani who loved Elvis so we played loads of his stuff and they danced up a storm. Had ferrets out the back, probably the first time I encountered one.

Vale Wildlife Hospital & Rehabilitation Centre

 (1) Facebook

I think they are near Tewkesbury. They have a Pine Marten kit that was found in a rubbish bin. So cute.

Vale Wildlife Hospital is one of the UK's largest wildlife rehabilitation centres treating over 8,000 casualties every year. Charity No. 702888.

Etta James - Dance With Me Henry (1958 Version)

Susan likes this one. We used to have a ferret Henry and she would sing this to him. Incidentally there has been a lot of ferret sheds getting raided and all the ferrets getting stolen. One breeder in Taunton lost 32 and is most upset but folks have been saying it is happening a lot atm.

The Fall - Kimble 1992

For Fall Friday. I was convinced this was going to be a hit. We had a ferret called Kimble after this song. Original by Lee Perry.

Huntsmen and Terriers & Ferrets Rabbiting, 19th Century - George Armfield

We didn't hunt with our ferrets but some we need did go to hunt. White and small ones were most sought after. We mostly bred large polecat ones.

National Polecat Survey

Polecat wiki

We are in the midst of the polecat mating season continues until early April. During this time, there is a peak in polecat road casualties, as male polecats are moving around and crossing roads to find females, so this is a good time of year to keep your eyes peeled for polecats on the road.

We are appealing for hair and whisker samples from deceased polecats for research purposes. If you want to collect samples, email us at enquiries@vwt.org.uk for more information.

Schleich Mustelids

We as a family like toys. My eldest works in toy retail. These are models in our collection. The ferret was discontinued as a choking hazard but we managed to grab a couple. The other - a Wolverine is unavailable I think. The ferret one was repainted by Celia to look like a polecat type. Schleich website

Vanishing Point (1971)

A movie that was 50 years old in March. I can't say I'm a fan - Nigel our bass player loved this movie and I know it's a cult film but I wasn't a motorist when I saw it so that might explain it. Our family had a ferret called Kowalski though. We were planning on doing ferret racing and the plan was to have distinct characters and Kowalski (who was huge) was to wear a stars and stripes bandana and be American.

Kowalski and his nephew Napoleon - note the sellotape around the bottoms of Sue's trousrs😄😄

Napoleon the ferret

Did you know that if you do a Blog search for Napoleon the ferret you get some other ferret - an American one - so I think it's time to give him a bit more exposure. As you can see he's a little on the chubby side but he does get plenty of exercise - he just has a healthy appetite.
I've managed to prevent him getting the nickname Nappy but he is occasionally known as Mr Chuckles because of the happy noises he makes while he scurries about. Maybe I ought to record it and put out a cd - bet the other Napoleon hasn't had that.

Ferret photos

A couple of ferret photos for you - the one on top is Napoleon and his uncle Kowalski playing but the thing to note is the sellotape around the bottom of Susan's trousers - can you guess why it's there? (Answer; flares and free range ferrets don't mix - maybe that's why you don't see many hippies owning ferrets). The other pic is Napoleon's new toy - he nagged and nagged for a guitar - let's hope he does play it - by the way if you're thinking he's a bit chubby - he's just big boned alright?

Napoleon the Polecat

Is this the handsomest ferret you have ever seen? Looks like a polecat - Mustela putorius - the word polecat apparently derives from the French word for chicken meaning chicken cat. They live on frogs, voles, eels, rats and various fowl being strong swimmers. I suppose their niche has been taken by the imported Mink.
More stuff on polecats here including some photos and the fact that Polecats kill by 'pithing' or biting through the brain stem which leaves the prey alive but immobile - I heard once of someone who found a stash of frogs in a wall - all alive but paralysed.

Of course there was an 80s rockabilly band called the Polecats who featured Boz Boorer who is best known for his work with Morrissey. Watch their ultra-catchy orginal Make A Circuit With Me video here
Phew! Ferrets to Morrissey in one posting.
