More epic movie stuff

Oh the pre digital epic - when you really got your money's worth. This is from the film below - this part dealing with the fall of Berlin. There's a nice piece when a T-34 shunts a tramcar.

Heng Long KV 1

The world of cheap 1/16 scale WW2 r/c tanks has progressed a lot - they now do a Russian tank but it's not a T-34 surprisingly but a KV 1 - but with scale speed, smoke, noise and a BB or infrared battling version so quite a few improvements. Next up for import is apparently a Sherman.

Battle of Kursk

We used to have a lot of this sort of stuff on this blog - maybe I should have a bit more - this is a clip from a Soviet movie from 1969, Освобождение (Liberation). Looks great. For fans of the T-34 and more - though acording the IMdb on the movie they are T-34/85s - I don't know the difference..from what I've read on this movie it looks worth tracking down - epic stuff - apparently the most expensive Soviet movie - and like most Soviet films easy to download. Animals & Men at the OCCII Amsterdam

Caryne Pearce took some photos of us on stage a couple of weeks ago - one we printed out with a low ink cartridge and got this effect which we liked...so we scanned it.

Scars - Adultery/Horrorshow

Great song with a brilliant scratchy guitar over gnarly bass . A great double A-side from 79. They never seemed to reach the heights attained by this early single (with its other track 'Horrorshow' a nadsat inspired homage to the Clockwork Orange movie) but never mind - this is genius enough for one band. We saw this Scottish group (who were on Fast when this single was out but then signed to Pre I think) a while after but it was a bit of a disappointment - they had another good single or two ('They came and took her') and 'All About You' but they had lost their bite somehow. Shame. One of the best 45s of the post punk era.

J B Lenoir 'The Voodoo'

Filmed during a thunderstorm by a couple of Swedes who are seen at the end. Turn the volume up on this one.

Red Foley 'Pinball Boogie'

We love listening to Wfmu's Ichiban Rock and Soul stream - its like being educated and being entertained in the same breath - this one got thrown up a minute ago and Sue instantly fell in love with it.

This is a serial that was nearly remade by Hammer in 71. It's definitely an interesting idea.

R L Burnside Johnny Woods 'Telephone Blues'

Filmed in 1984. R L Burnside had an interesting career - discovered late in life in the early 90s and operating in the world of 'punk blues'.

I feel so good J B Lenoir

Lenoir is a highly underrated bluesman - but he had a great career on independent labels like JOB and also on Chess was still being an avant-garde and experimental figure in the blues. Not frightened of dealing with political issues JB received a visit from the 'Men in Black' about some of his critical of the government blues. There's some really good clips on the old tube but I chose this one as being the closest to his club style of the 50s. Hear him redo his big hit Mama Talk To Your Daughter here.

Sonny Boy 'Lonesome Cabin'

I suppose I ought to qualify my claim that Sonny Boy was a great poet - a great songwriter so I picked this one. The imagery of a small cabin with a stove in a lightning storm is pure genius - I love this song - I have it on 45.

Sonny Boy 'I'm a lonely man'

This is a great clip. I am really glad they didn't have someone 'doing Sonny Boy' in the movie Cadillac Records. Not that I watched it anyway. Anyway imagine this being on your tv back in the 60s - and video recorders weren't about - what music tv do we have these days?

Sam Chatmon 'Brownskin Woman'

Someone I should have put in with the strand of people associated with the stylings of Papa Charlie Patton is this man - possibly Patton's half-brother who was a Mississippi Sheik back in the day. Lovely sound on this clip - it's like he's there twanging on those strings in your front room. Another clip here

Big Joe Williams 'Low Down Dirty Shame'

With a career spanning playing logging camps and barrelhouses to being a Bluebird recording star and then becoming a folk boom favourite BJW and his 9 (count 'em) string guitar did it all.

Yardbirds 'I Wish You Would'

When we were the Terraplanes we used to do a cover of this...I have some film of us doing it in 82 somewhere - maybe I'll dig it out.

Funny review of Animals & men

In a mention here. Luckily we all really love the Big Lebowski...
awesome girl fronted post punk from inglaterra. If you like kleenex/lilliput, the raincoats, or even young marble giants, chances are you will really dig this. The vocalist sounds all austere and what not like what you would imagine the "vagina" artist-woman from big lebowski sounding like if she fronted a post punk band. I love this band. Its creepy poppy awesome.
Also we chuckled at this
ANIMALS & MEN weren't the greatest players ever but they wrote some damn catchy songs. Hey, ADAM ANT named a song after them so they gotta be great right?

Sonny Boy Williamson

I have been a big fan of Sonny Boy since I was about 14 years old - setting myself the goal of trying to get all his records in some form or other - a crazy task which I have now abandoned but I am always on the lookout for more tracks. On this excellent site which is a goldmine of information I learn of a session he did with a band called the Skunks who were the only rock band that was signed to Chess who apparently had dyed black and white hair. Sonny Boy dropped in one day in 64 and sat in with them. Sonny Boy must have played with more musicians than anyone else on the planet. There's even a cd on the website that has Sonny Boy playing guitar! One day in the future Sonny Boy will be revered and held as one of America's greatest songwriters and musicians - dare I call him the Black Bob Dylan? He's up there with the top ten US musicians I reckon but as you know I know nothing and am nothing.

The Kills 'Sugar Baby'

The Kills covering Dock Boggs? You think I am kidding don't you? This is not bad - Sue and I were trying to play this song a couple of weekends ago so I can see where they are coming from - if you want to hear the original search Boggs in the bar at the top of this blog.

Gene Vincent 'You are My Sunshine'

I love this version and this video has some excellent images to go with it - think of them as stills for a future movie about Eddie Cochran and Gene Vincent coming to the grimy world of Britain in 1960 - playing the Bristol Hippodrome - possibly following some Radstock Teddy Boys who have gone to see them and then bang! Death on the A4. They made a big impression over here - possibly helping to create the British beat boom - I actually know of two people who were patients in St Martin's hospital in Bath when they brought in a dead Eddie...a sad moment - the 50th anniversary of which will be in April this year so be prepared for a night in with Eddie and Gene.

Another disciple of the Great One.You know I fell in love with the music of Charley Patton before I heard it? I used to have trouble at the age of 13-14 getting hold of blues records but the local library had a few good books on the subject and one they had was John Fahey's book on Charley Patton with a biography, lyrics and even chords and so forth - I was fascinated.

Booker White 'Aberdeen etc'

Another disciple of the church of Charlie Patton (of which I am lowly novice - maybe a choirboy?) is Booker or Bukka White. He is vocally very indebted to Patton and his guitar style is also close. I love this sort of stuff and I think you'll enjoy this but there's no accounting for people's musical tastes is there?

Son House 'Death Letter Blues'

Someone influenced by Papa Charlie (see below) is of course Son House. Here you can see him manhandling his guitar in a style reminiscent of Patton.

A pinball in old Amsterdam

Well we had a great time playing the OCCII in Amsterdam - what a venue and such a great team working away to make it happen. They were able to direct us to some pinball in the Soundgarden which has two - 'the Getaway' and 'Theatre of Magic'. Well worth a visit if you like the silver balls.

Battle of Orgreave

I suppose I ought to finish up my mining season with some film on the British miner's strike of 84-86 - specially as it's the 25th anniversary. I do find it quite hard watching these clips as they still make me angry and sad...I couldn't believe it could happen but it did and I still grieve over it. In fact I gave up politics in 85 - up til then I'd been an active member of the Labour Party standing in council elections and so forth but this strike and its lack of support among the 'labour movement' proved to me that this country had turned to the dark side and was beyond saving. I got into reenactment instead. Harmless escapism rather than the frustration of 80s Thatcher's Britain. Funny thing was, a few years ago, they were recruiting reenactors to take part (as either side) for a documentary on the Battle of Orgreave - paying money and all that but I felt I was too emotionally involved in the subject for me to go and throw a riot shield about.

Harlan County USA

Thanks to Red for finding this. It's a trailer for the documentary about the bloody strike in Kentucky in 1973. I think it's up in parts on Youtube. A tv movie 'The Harlan County War' was made in 2000 with Holly Hunter on the same subject. Disputes in coal mines in America seem to be pretty violent. I suppose the most violent incident must be the Battle of Blair Mountain when US air force bombed their own citizens for the only time in history.

70 Gwen Party - the Power Elite

This piece of music is included as part of my mining season. Showing post Thatcher decline by surely the greatest Welsh band ever. (I think they were Welsh). We play them a lot - they don't seem to be everyone's cup of tea but we keep trying to get people to like them. I wish they'd reform - never saw them live.

Girl on a Motorcycle (1968)

The British-French film starring Marianne Faithful was a firm favourite for a young lad like me when I saw it on tv - why weren't there girls like that at my school? - in fact why weren't there girls at my school full stop? Anyway it's a great 60s romp that also works well as a sound turned down movie. We did consider trying to write some music to go with it and have it projected behind us once but it was only a whim. one day. It could be easily parodied for a pop video - all you need is a trailer and a camera...

The Leather Boys (1964)

This Sydney J Furie film is a must-see. Dealing with the difficult subject of marriage and homosexuality with Dudley Sutton in one of his many camp roles which he graced the British screen with. Film sort of reminds me of Morrisey for some reason.

British biker movies - Psychomania

I am going to do a short season of biker films from Britain - you can watch them with the sound down and insert your favourite backing track if you like. This one is a real treat - complete with George Sanders as an evil butler. He committed suicide shortly after. It's not that bad...it's brilliant if you are in the right frame of mind - and maybe someone should make a remake - still keep it in the 70s but push the envelope a bit more on the music and so forth.

Shadows - The Leather Boy

This is a great song - I just love its simplicity, its funeral type atmosphere - I reckon its Gothic psyche...can someone make a video for it with dry ice and papier mache tombstones or something - maybe use clips from Psychomania.

The Molly Maguires (1970)

This mining movie set in Pennsylvania is next up on the list. It's a good movie with some good performances and worth catching if it comes on tv.

Germinal

Well you can't have a mining movie season without the perhaps the greatest film about striking miners - I was so blown away by this film when it came out. Such a classic.

Matewan (1987)

This movie set in Virginia and starring James Earl Jones among many is a well-worth searching-out film.

Clyde McPhatter 'You'll be there'

It's a scandal how few clips of this great singer are up on Youtube. He is probably the greatest singer in the RnB genre in the 50s and that's saying something. In a way he is like the black Presley in that he was drafted in 1954 at the height of his fame. It's a shame he died in obscurity and feeling he had been abandoned. I certainly have a lot of his records including the Drifters sides.

Dock Boggs

Did ya see the BBC 4 documentary Folk America last night? Catch it on i-player if you missed it - it was very good - mostly covering the 20s it featured many legends including this singing coal-miner.

Frome pics

There's not so much on the Bath in Time site (see below) on Frome apart from a load of pics of Jensen Button as a 12 year old if that's your bag but this image attracted me - it's the old cinema along Cork Street before the Westway Centre was built. They used to show films in a rolling rotation so I remember sitting in there for two or more showings and my parents coming and oiking me out.

Susan and I really love looking at old photos of the mining town where we live and the surrounding villages - working out where they are taken and so forth - so you can imagine we were in hog heaven when we found a new-to-us batch of old photos on the Bath in Time website. Simply search Radstock and off you go. This image is perplexing - anyone know what we're looking at here? Is that Tyning Hill in the background? Maybe it's not Radstock... I shall have to ask my Dad - he'll know.

'And you have the nerve to try to be glad!' Recorded in Germany in 1980 with a dream team lineup including Odie Payne (drums), Hubert Sumlin and Eddie Taylor. Mabon is a great songwriter and singer from the Chess stable and should be better known. Enjoy damn you! You know I added this to my favourites before I'd even seen it that's how confident I was that this would be good - Willie Mabon is the man who wrote the lines 'I bought me a blade - one I could afford - too long to be a knife and too short to be a sword' or 'every day when I shave in my housecoat - two men have to hold me so I don't cut my throat' what a man.

Last year we were trying to describe our home town and Susan and I started going ' A Little Village M*********er Little Village' which, them not knowing the reference caused a quizzical response. Listen to the intro and hear what we meant. Actually I could easily write a song with that as the chorus 'LVMF Little Village.... LVMF Little Village' but it would be a bit of a 'Drinkin' Wine Spo-dee-O-dee' rip off. Anyway listen to this intro and tell me that SB Williamson isn't the coolest man that ever lived.

Excello blues

Every now and then I get the desire to try and replicate the Excello sound - dark, echoey, minimal and (here's the hard part) brilliant. Slim Harpo is the most famous but Lightnin' Slim has a vocal style that is a joy to behold. Best thing I have read on the Excello label is Mike Leadbitter's Crowley Louisiana Blues booklet - maybe I ought to scan it.

Dr Feelgood 'Roxette'

This song should have been a number one. It still makes me somehow adrenalised - maybe it's playing with my teenage memories of being 15, dancing to this in a disco, with the knowledge that at any moment a load of squaddies were going to try and beat you up for so doing. Good times. No seriously I think there is a menace in Feelgood's music that is bang on for the time - there was a lot of frustration and rage around in the 70s or was that just round our house?

Sonny Boy Williamson 'Bye Bye Bird'

Before Dr Feelgood came along I was mostly into blues. I didn't really have any faith in the music that was going down in contemporary Britain I have to say at that time. The Old Grey Whistle Test was to me the most boring programme on telly, but something clicked with me with the Feelgoods - I think it was the harp - they even did a cover of Checking Up On My Baby - they reminded me of a Yardbirds or similar beat boom band that had been locked in ice for ten years - they sounded like Johnny Kidd and the Pirates with harmonica. I didn't jump on them quick like - oh no - I was so disdainful of modern music at the time that it took a long time to melt through my indifference. But one of the great influences on bands by the Feelgoods was in my opinion a sense of no-nonsense, no frills, no loons, down-to-earth mono black and white music and it set a nation on the path to punk.

The first section of this film is of particular interest to me - it shows footage from around here. This is up Haydon behind the miner's houses - my Uncle Terry used to work there at the time. Well done to the man who filmed this - a classic bit of film.

Snow 1963

Are you getting nostalgic for the snow? If you like the stuff then you might enjoy this beautiful film which shows the epic snowfall and the attempts to get trains moving. I wish there was more of this sort of stuff...magic

Trash Culture The Bad Detectives

One band that isn't afraid to admit to being influenced by Dr Feelgood is this band now releasing their third cd - talk about prolific...lots of themes and musical styles are covered though the bedrock is based on the Canvey sound of the 70s.
Favourite is of course the 'certain to be a hit' song about the Cerne Abbas giant turning his baby's head which I believe is going to have a promo made for it so fingers crossed - I can see local tv loving it to bits. There are some great tracks on this pot-pourri of RnB - hear a sampler from their album on the myspace.

Animals & Men anniversary

It's about 30 years to the day since this record was released. It was recorded in September 79 but we had to wait an agonising amount of time for this to actually come out - I remember all sorts of excuses for its delay like an Abba record selling loads and the plant couldn't be bothered to press just a thousand in their Christmas rush period and so on. Of course Peel played it the first song of the night the actual night when he got it - which was nice - and the rest, is of course history.

There was a time when you could watch a double bill of George Raft movies but when was the last time you saw him or one of his contemporaries on your screen? This is a pretty star studded affair that is worth watching if you miss old monochrome movies.

We were having one of those 'grabbing singles out at random' sessions last night and came across this golden oldie. It really is a time capsule with all its name checks and so forth. Not sure who the band were - journos and members of the Hot Rods or so I thought...good record though.

I Can Tell - The Pirates

This is how Susan and I remember the Pirates - we were lucky enough to see them a few times, around this time and believe us - they rocked! We were used to seeing all the good punk bands from both sides of the Atlantic but this band took the place apart...something about the perfection of Mick Green's guitar took me - one who was used to Wilko and various acolytes - onto a new level seeing the originator. He had a brilliant career - I remember seeing him on telly playing behind Paul McCartney at the Cavern and I know he played with Van (baby what baby?) Morrison but this was our favourite moment... them rocking the younguns in a piratey way.

Ants live New Years Eve 1979

Ah those were the days. Sue and I were at this gig - still have the flyer - it was Leroy Gorman on bass but Andy Warren was in the audience and took over mixing as the gig wore on... McLaren was there too in a tartan suit with kilt...this audio commences about the time Sue started to faint due to lack of air...good times. Actually the references to the UK Subs are interesting - they were playing somewhere nearby that night and there were scraps between rival fans after the gig. If you like Ants stuff someone has uploaded a bunch of 77 bedroom demos onto Youtube...interesting...I really like 'Weekend Swingers' - anyone got the words?

A film in colour shot just before the General Strike of 1926. I am interested in all manner of things related to mining and this footage is an amazing glimpse into a world that has been lost forever.

Today in 1980 Lennon was shot so that's one excuse to post this and the other is the fact that we have had something like 51 days of the stuff without letup. I think someone ought to write some more rain songs as it's more a part of our winter than all these 'Marshmallow world' or 'Frosty the Snowman' types of thing you get at the moment.

Pickled Onions

Just finished peeling a huge batch of pickling onions ready for Christmas. If you want to do some yourself now is about the right time to get them in. Of course your eyes and nose stream...but I found that if you do it outside it's better, but well ventilating the work area is also helpful. We bought some pickling spice to beef them up a little - this will probably result in a few difficult moments for those not initiated into the world of eating strong pickled onions. Try to avoid this non-brew condiment as a vinegar substitute - it's the stuff they use in chip shops and its not really vinegar.

We are very excited to be playing in 2010 at this famous venue on March 6th for a special show. Article on the venue's history here

The OCCII is a music venue that specialises in alternative and underground music, from hardcore punk through to trance. The majority of the OCCII crew are volunteers, keeping in line with the venue's squatting history and culture. Squatters moved into the building in 1984 and were granted ownership in 1989. On the opposite end of the spectrum, the venue is also home to less alternative activities, including children's theatre, arts & crafts and noise sampling workshops. Venue website here

This was on Ichiban's rock and soul stream last night - it must be 40 years since I remember hearing it before - there's a nice live version of it on youtube but it lacks the essential backing vocals so we'll go with this one. It's the sort of thing that used to get played on the radio when I was a little one.
