Horse drawn Omnibus 1865 London

On the subject of omnibuses a story my dad told me must have been before his time but anyway on Saturday nights miners used to ambush the horse drawn buses along the Fosseway and unhook the horses and chase them off for a bit of mischief.

General strike 1926 centenary

I wonder if there will be much in the way of commemorating the anniversary of this major historical event. I have this book. Radstock was as a mining town in the thick of it.

Tanks were deployed

High School MC5 1970

. For Wayne Kramer. I used to do this in my first band.

Horseplay Eddie and the Hot Rods with Lew Lewis playlist

Short playlist of the best r'n'b band of that era. In my opinion neither the Rods or Lew Lewis would ever equal this greatness.

Sad story

 George Baker (12)

The accident took place at Hayeswood pit in Timsbury, the property of S. Samborne esq. The boy's duty was to stand at the bottom of the shaft with an adult and receive the coal before it was Sent up to the surface. On this occasion the man was absent. For some unknown reason the boy left his place and went along the incline where he was met by the loaded tram coming up. He tried to cling to the eighteen inches of space between the tram and the road but sadly someone had allowed a piece of coal to project and it struck him in the head, knocking him down. The wheels of the tram passed over his thigh. The leg was later amputated under chloroform but he died of shock. (BGa 9.9.1852) from Killed in a Coalpit 2

Fanny Dayer the nymph of Avon street

This is an article about Bath's prostitutes. Here

"Bath was not always the safe, prosperous environment promoted by websites, guidebooks and novels.

The city attracted a motley crew of scroungers, thieves, prostitutes and conmen looking for easy money. There were also those who had come to the city with the best intentions, fallen on hard times and ended up on the streets."

The Shanels Why did I? 1965

Somerset coal canal Radstock branch.

Been interested recently in the early 1800s in Radstock. When a coal canal went through the centre. Before the railways. I read somewhere that it was dug by French prisoners of war but this may be a myth. This booklet has a lot of useful stuff available from Radstock Museum. Wiki

Bath a new history

Susan picked this book today. It's very interesting. Has chapters on the lower classes and the criminal elements.

Keele University Press, 1996 - History - 208 pages
Focusing on Bath, this work forms part of a series that examines how towns have been shaped by major historical forces, and how the sweeps of history manifest themselves in particular urban communities. It aims to help the reader understand urbanization by comparing local experiences.
