Napoleon

So the reviews are coming in for Ridley Scott's Napoleon and they are mostly favourable. Are you going to see it? I will probably wait for the DVD as going to the cinema is a bit of a palaver. Review by the BF I here Check out my blog on Waterloo here and my 1790s blog here

John Skinner

This is the Reverend John Skinner. He was rector at Camerton where he wrote his memoirs. In the Napoleonic wars he tried to form a unit of sappers and miners among the men of Radstock but only had limited success. He also was an antiquarian being involved in the long barrow at Stoney Littleton. He shot himself.

Waldegrave Arms Radstock

Now known as the Radstock Hotel. They used to play quoits in the garden out the back. We played a music event there called the Radstock festival in about 2003. Was pretty good.

The Crown Inn Frome

An old pub. Used to be known as the Crown at Keyford to differentiate it from the Crown in the town centre which is no more.

Doing anything they wanna do Eddie and the Hot Rods

The Hot Rods with Lew Lewis on harmonica is a wondrous thing seldom bettered. I find them at their very peak. Search this blog for Hot Rods to see them in action. This album has about 7 tracks with the late Lew Lewis on. Let's just say I was a fan. First 6 or 7 songs

Ralph watching the Carnival

My Carnival portrait for this year. Drinking cider from a paper cup in the rain. It was great fun. Hat made by my daughter-in-law. Pics by Susan.

Gene Vincent - Ain't That Too Much 1966

I love this album. Very varied but the lead track is so good you have to listen to that. One of my all time favourite songs. I can stress too much that this song has it all.

New York Dolls Personality Crisis 1973

50 years ago was the era of the New York Dolls. They came to the UK and were on the telly. So I will be posting the odd 73 performance for your enjoyment.

Animals & Men John of the Sword 2007

Recorded live in a living room in North Somerset. This was one of our best videos - shot by James B. Maximum rock and roll chose this as their video of the week once. The song is about me being called Napoleon at school and my reaction to it. We played indoors as it was raining and I had promised the Bad Detectives who we borrowed the PA off we wouldn't get their stuff wet.

10 years ago a review in Maximum Rock'n'roll. Animals & Men

The review is by Allan McNaughton: "A new self-released 10" from eternal post-punk underdogs Animals and Men. I think the four tracks are a mix of old and new material, but it was all recorded this year.If you've heard the band, you won't be in for any surprises musically:primitive, simple bass-driven post punk with Susan's detached vocals over the top. The surprise is that they still sound somewhat fresh and relevant. They do what they do without pretension and there's something very admirable about that, especially after all these years. My hat is off to 'em." Travellin this lonesome road lp

I bought this album in the 70s. A blues compilation on a budget label. I think I bought it in a supermarket. Discogs here. I first encountered Cannon's Jug stomped on this. Pretty Mama blues

On the same label I also had this for about £1

Listen to 'The Right Kind of Life' by Sonny Boy Williamson I here

If you are trying to imagine what the below ensemble sounded like the nearest I can think of is Cannon's Jug Stompers. I love them and think you might like them. Here on Spotify. Noah Lewis was the harmonica player and he is very influential.

Document Records posted this

"American Civil War - apparently an 1863 Union army camp scene where soldiers are entertained by a group of touring African American musicians. One can only guess at what songs they played."

Bridgwater Carnival 2023

We like to watch the live stream of the legendary carnival. It is very good. Like being there but without the chills and aromas of onions. We watch it in r.l. when it comes to Midsomer Norton. News piece

Dave Barbarossa interview

Here. Very interesting interview. Dave is one of our favourite musicians. We have met him a few times and he's a great bloke. Played in early Ants and Bow Wow wow plus a career as a drummer.

Sony Walkman 1979. These were state of the art back then. Susan's Dad liked to get the latest technology so bought her one. I had to go in the hospital and so I borrowed it and Susan brought in new batteries when she visited. I let some of the nurses and patients try it. Magic.

Gene Vincent on a scooter

I guess this was in France. Gene was very popular in France.

Debbie Harry and pinball

Debbie Harry and pinball. When we got married we were custodians of two pinball which a friend was happy to store them at our place. It was a 3 bed house so we had one room just for the tables. We spent many hours playing. They looked great when all the lights were off when the room was illuminated by the tables.

Purnell's History of the Second World War

This partwork was printed in Paulton when it was the best and most advanced printing place in Europe. My Uncle Arthur worked there and  gave us the whole series of about 6 volumes. Wiki

Celia and David

Our middle daughter and her man at our son's wedding reception. It was on Halloween so they dressed up! Many people did. It was a great evening with a marvellous deejay partly doing karaoke with the people there doing songs. My son and daughter in law did Love Shack which was fantastic. Photo by Bea.
