Pathé Newsreel. My Mum was one of these. Around this time. She biked all over, sometimes using the train and then cycling to places like France. When my Dad was courting his sisters were very curious about her shorts. Sadly I think she gave up when she got married.

Lovely bit of pop blues with some great backing vocals on the break. Pinched them for Man With the Spiked-toed shoes in 1982. I was talking with Anthony Lennane about this and he said it was Vee-Jay 's plan to make him appeal more to a teen market and Jimmy Reed liked it.
Children's tv programme. 50 years ago (October 72). I was too old for it but my little bro was 6 so he used to watch it.

"We became good friends over the years I knew him and watched him perform many times in Clubs, Pubs and large theatres in London and all over the south east of England. I took a few photos of him both on and off stage but I wish I had a movie camera as there is only ONE piece of film known performing & that was ruined by a flashing projected light behind him which obscured him. With the help of my mate Guy Stevens I started his Fan base here in the UK in the 1960's following my first meeting with him in Vancouver in 1958. It grew to a membership of over 4,500."

Got this film for 50p this weekend. Ken Loach lives nearby in Bath. Anyway it's a great film with a story we can all enjoy. Wiki. As I have mentioned before Susan's Grandmother lived in Cork at this time so it resonates with us.
Bit of nostalgia for you - the theme tunes were often the best bits.
Not a huge SLF fan but we bought the first two singles in fact our copy of this was hand stamped by the band and got a good price.
Last time I saw the Cramps they opened with this one.

I had this toy as a child. Merchandising was still a new phenomenon so it made it even more exciting. Not my pic. It had a wind-up propeller and I can still see it ploughing a furrow through the bath scum. If you don't know Stingray then watch this. Some really exciting titles and theme music.
Picked up a DVD of the Carpenters' Greatest Hits today for 50p. I quite like the Carpenters. I didn't like them at the time no sir but have come to enjoy their cheesey conservative schmaltz over time. This one for instance started life as a song on an insurance commercial which was then adapted by the band. But it's good to see Karen playing drums which is what she did initially.

It is very rare to see anybody any good on Jools Holland. Susan really liked the Hives and we luckily saw them at Bristol a few years ago and they were great.
Heard a preview of the forthcoming album by French post-punk band the Dictaphone - the album is called Xerox Music and they cover a mess of post-punk classics including a very good cover of our song Render Us Harmless. It's not out yet but when it is I hope you will like it as we do. Hear our original.

This is something my younger brother would have liked to have seen as he likes a lot of the bands. Canned Heat are about the only I like.
I like songs about buses. This is one of the best. About the Alabama bus boycott but it's a very good song and is very engaging and an unusual subject for blues. You won't regret listening to this. It's a cracker.

A blistering track. According to Blues Records 1943-66 Mike Leadbitter and Neil Slaven piano was (?) 'Connon', guitars Robert Lockwood Jr and Luther Tucker. Willie Dixon bass and Fred Below drums. It is a cracking ensemble piece with stinging guitar and brilliant drums.
Silent footage. Max Moore, owner of Interstate Grocery in Helena, Arkansas, was the sponsor for radio station KFFA's "King Biscuit Time" program. We believe he shot this home movie circa 1942. In it, renowned blues musicians Robert 'Junior' Lockwood and Sonny Boy Williamson perform on the front porch of a small-town Arkansas grocery store. This is likely the earliest footage of these musicians performing together. The second portion of the clip is a 1952 tour featuring Williamson and his band. This film was preserved with a grant from the National Film Preservation Foundation. Max Moore Home Movie Collection.

I think it was this 1974 edition that I had as a teen. I really liked it. I didn't really like the movie but isn't that always the case? Originally published in 1943. Wiki on the book here.
The first version - considerable differences.
I am not an expert but this looks early in their career. I really love this song. I don't know why - it's a kind of crossover - folk rock and rhythm and blues that makes a lovely dance tune.

Going to do a few Beatles posts to mark the 60th anniversary of Love Me Do. These are items my big sister had. I found the pics online as the actual items were sold long ago. My sister also did a picture of the Beatles that was shown on the telly. She is still doing excellent artwork but not of the Beatles. So I grew up with the Beatles and when my son was getting interested in music he had a collection of Beatles cassettes for his Fisher-Price tape machine. Now his son happily sings Beatles songs (he does a lovely Yellow Submarine) as he goes to sleep so 3 generations!

Happy birthday Eddie Cochran. Earl Palmer's drumm riff was a cop from Keep a Knockin' by Little Richard though Eddie was unaware of the steal.
This is a bit of blues history. 15 minutes of Sonny Boy on the King Biscuit time radio show. It's when he has just come back from England and he is announced as 'the man with the spiked toed shoes' which I used for a song. I have this on vinyl but you lucky people get it free. It shouldn't really work - the Hollies and Peter Sellers but it does. I think the song is written by Burt Bacharach.
When I started work in print it was quite common for the older men taking snuff. Originally smoking was banned and so printers ingested their tobacco like that.
