Comp room display at Radstock Museum
When I started work in 1977 in Frome this was the set up in the comp room. Hot metal was the name. Those are type cases in display both upper and lower case versions. There would be a case for each size. You used a setting stick to compose the text and then locked into a chase which is on the right of the 'frame' .My Dad and Uncle Arthur were in the trade. They started at Purnell's.
