Delivery boy blues

This image of an advert for bread at Gold Hill Shaftesbury reminds me of my time of being a delivery boy at the Co-op in Frome. My parents got me the job and my boss was Mrs. Dallimore. She was quite strict- a no nonsense type. She had a catch phrase which I still use - when things fall out of your grasp or you fumbled you exclaim 'they'm all alive!' I got 5p for every delivery. After school. Frome is very hilly and the bike was ancient and solid with no brakes. I took my life in my hands going about on a daily basis. I had to crash the bike to stop it. All over Frome but mostly the poorer sorts who used the delivery set up at the Co-op. The Mount. Watcombe Road. Wallbridge. Heavy boxes strapped in place with bungees. At Christmas the recipients would give me a tip. I eventually gave up doing it and lived to tell the tale. Made a paper round seem idyllic.
