Jägermeißter shirt

My German exchange. When I was a young teenager I participated in a German exchange which meant living with a foreign family for a month. It was traumatic. I finished up fighting my host in Hannover zoo. But they gave me a sweatshirt. Didn't know what it was. Visit to the VW factory

Midsomer Norton Christmas lights switch on.

Norton was very busy tonight. All the shops stayed open and there was music. Saw some familiar faces. It was like Gobbler's Knob!

Animals & Men 1979 first demo

Tomorrow is Bandcamp Friday so a good time to buy a download. This is probably the most popular of our digital tracks.

The Pogues Medley the Recruiting Sergeant / Rocky Road To Dublin / The Galway Races

I think this is my favourite Pogues song. It is ferocious. From 1988. At the time I was disappointed by this L.P. when it came out but this track I loved.

Budapest Flipper Museum Pinball pilgrimage

Managed to catch my son and hear about his weekend with mate George in Budapest playing pinball. He said it was reasonably priced. Opens 4pm and closes at midnight. They don't serve alcohol and it has an enormous collection of pinball mostly vintage. Most of the most famous tables were there. Well worth it he concluded. Website

If you are interested in the New Zealand Wars you might like this film. Trailer is brand new. Looks good.

IMDB says

A lay preacher who arrives at a British settlement in 1830s. His violent past is soon drawn into question and his faith put to the test, as he finds himself caught in the middle of a bloody war between Maori tribes.

There is a forthcoming drama based on the events of 1066 called King and Conqueror. BBC article here. I have always thought this would make great cinema so count me in.

Mozart Estate Poundland

We have a Poundland opening on Saturday in Midsomer Norton and one of our friends has just started working there so when we heard this song last night on Riley & Coe it made us smile. A current song. Good.

The Bristol Punk Explosion 1977-79

I haven't been able to find a tracklisting for this. Oh it's on Discogs. Has the Media on it. Saw them a lot. It's on Spotify. No reason not to give it a listen. I was at printing college during this time which had us staying in digs. Used to go out every night - how I met Susan. Lots of gigs were in the week. I used to see the Cortinas about at the cinema etc. We used to go to the Arnolfini which was an art house cinema, they had punk movies like the Blank Generation which were screened.

Eddie and the Hot Rods Horseplay

Not sure of the date of this. Probably 76. When Lew Lewis was with them. Used to do this with the Bad Detectives - quite a banger, well worth a watch.

Horseplay - Eddie and the Hot Rods with Lew Lewis a playlist

Short playlist of the best r'n'b band of that era. In my opinion neither the Rods or Lew Lewis would ever equal this greatness.

Peter Kay placemats

One of the best things about Charity shops is you never know what you will see. On Saturday our daughter picked up these.

Napoleon movie

Are you going to go? I know the difference between a movie and history so am not expecting too much from it. My son and his wife are going to see it. They are not history buffs but movie buffs so I will be interested in what they think. I will probably wait as we don't have a cinema in my town. My inner 12 year old is keen to see it.

Gig we played with the Monochrome Set

Back in 2014 we played a gig in Paris with the Monochrome Set. We got to chat with Bid a fair bit as we were fellow smokers and found ourselves outside puffing at the same time. Nice chap. Susan was on crutches as she slipped over about a week before. Charles de Goal were excellent too. See us play Easy Riding at this gig here

Winklepickers

I used to love winklepickers. This pic is from 1964. I suppose I was wearing them late 70s early 80s.

Monochrome Set Old Grey Whistle Test 1980

This is great. One of the first things we videoed off the television as Susan's parents had a player. B-i-d spells Bid, Lighter side of dating and 405 lines.

The Monochrome Set the Lighter side of dating 1980

Loved this band at the time. This is one of our favourites. Skip the beginning of this.

Original Adam & the Ants bass player. Very cool. We used to stand on his side when we saw the Ants. He later joined the Monochrome Set and I remember going backstage and grilling him about the Ants. Very interesting. Still plays with the Monochrome Set.

Gloria Jones Tainted Love 1964

We watched the Bolan doc Angelheaded Hipster and found it a bit crap. Lots of annoying stuff with people like Nick Cave and Macy Gray doing covers. There were a few clips we hadn't seen before so that was ok.

Smithereens 1982

This movie is worth watching if you are a Richard Hell fan. It's not the best punk movie but it is worth seeing.

Smithereens is a 1982 American drama film directed by Susan Seidelman[1] and starring Susan Berman, Brad Rijn (billed as "Brad Rinn"), and Richard Hell.[2] The film follows a narcissistic, young woman[3] from New Jersey who comes to New York City to join the waning punk subculture, only to find that she's gravitated towards Los Angeles; in order to pay her way across country, she engages in a number of parasitic relationships, shifting her allegiances to new "friends" in an ongoing effort to ultimately endear herself to someone who will finance her desired lifestyle.[4]

Napoleon

So the reviews are coming in for Ridley Scott's Napoleon and they are mostly favourable. Are you going to see it? I will probably wait for the DVD as going to the cinema is a bit of a palaver. Review by the BF I here Check out my blog on Waterloo here and my 1790s blog here

John Skinner

This is the Reverend John Skinner. He was rector at Camerton where he wrote his memoirs. In the Napoleonic wars he tried to form a unit of sappers and miners among the men of Radstock but only had limited success. He also was an antiquarian being involved in the long barrow at Stoney Littleton. He shot himself.

Waldegrave Arms Radstock

Now known as the Radstock Hotel. They used to play quoits in the garden out the back. We played a music event there called the Radstock festival in about 2003. Was pretty good.

The Crown Inn Frome

An old pub. Used to be known as the Crown at Keyford to differentiate it from the Crown in the town centre which is no more.

Doing anything they wanna do Eddie and the Hot Rods

The Hot Rods with Lew Lewis on harmonica is a wondrous thing seldom bettered. I find them at their very peak. Search this blog for Hot Rods to see them in action. This album has about 7 tracks with the late Lew Lewis on. Let's just say I was a fan. First 6 or 7 songs

Ralph watching the Carnival

My Carnival portrait for this year. Drinking cider from a paper cup in the rain. It was great fun. Hat made by my daughter-in-law. Pics by Susan.
