Suite Française (2014)

Today we watched this romantic drama set in occupied France. It was very good. A tale of collaboration and love between enemies. Wiki. It is based on a bestseller that was written during the war but lay undiscovered for 60 years. The author was killed at Auschwitz. Tempted to read the novel. My library has it. Worth the 50p I speculated on it.

Rough and rowdy Radstock

. Moses Horler''s recollections are an insight into early Radstock before the coming of the railways. Extracts are printed in the book Radstock reminisces available from the Museum.

'However, I am sorry to be obliged to tell you, that when I was quite a boy, there was a great deal of fighting amongst the colliers here at Radstock and neighbourhood, and remember it as quite a common thing for these fights to last nearly an hour, and sometimes if the battle was not finished on Saturday nights, it would actually begin again on Monday, and they would even lose a day's work to finish it, and some of the gentry would go and see those fights, and I am afraid they sometimes helped to keep the battle going, by backing up one side or the other.'

The Sonics the Witch

The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society

Just watched this. I picked it up on DVD in a 4 for a pound deal. It is very charming. Filmed in Devon partly I think and there is a scene from Bristol harbour posing as Weymouth.

Directed by Mike Newell and based on the best-selling and much loved novel by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows, THE GUERNSEY LITERARY AND POTATO PEEL PIE SOCIETY sees Lily James play free-spirited writer Juliet Ashton, who forms a life-changing bond with the delightful and eccentric Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society, when she decides to write about the book club they formed during the occupation of Guernsey in WWII.

From this day in music. Not sure if the veracity of this as I am not a Style Council.

7 May 1983

Former Jam leader Paul Weller unveiled his new group The Style Council at an anti nuclear benefit gig in London. The Style Council scored seven UK Top 10 hits and the band was also very successful in Australia and New Zealand during the 1980s, with multiple hit singles and album.

Happy birthday Link. Susan shook his hand when we saw him in the early 80s. This is one of my favourites.

Last load from Kilmersdon 1973 (9 mins)

"Kilmersdon Colliery in Somerset is closing its mineshafts for good after over one hundred years extracting high-grade coal. The entrance to the mine was in Haydon and so the colliery was also known as Hayden Pit. The pit was established in 1875 as part of the Writhlington group of collieries and located directly above the Somerset coalfield. There has been evidence of coal extraction in the area dating to 1437.

During its life Kilmersdon became one of the deepest mines in Britain reaching over five hundred metres or sixteen hundred feet. The mine was nationalised after World War II becoming part of the National Coal Board and had the last gravity working industrial rope incline in the UK, a double track with an incline of one hundred and sixty yards and had a junction onto a section of Great Western Railways Bristol and North Somerset Railway. The mine was closed in August 1973 and its structures were demolished and its shaft filled and the area was landscaped. Kilmersdon is still home to the estates of Lord Hylton and the Joliffe family. The village said to be the home of the Jack and Jill nursery rhyme. "

Weekend Summer days/Drumbeat for baby 1982

Wiki here. Who remembers this - from about 1982? Maybe you haven't heard this jazz-tinged bit of post punk loveliness before. An offshoot of Young Marble Giants this band did well but maybe not as well as it should have done. Funny now hearing it it conjures up images and feelings from around the time - the nostalgia of young and carefree times. I think at the time I used to play the lp when I was in a bright and breezy frame of mind...which was more frequent than now when I am mostly in curmudgeon mode.
