Elvis Costello 'too slow'

I remember when I was a youth Henry of the Bad Detectives was trying to get me into Elvis Costello and me in my 17 year old self thinking it was too slow. Everything had to be fast. I quite liked a b-side called Mystery Dance but that was as far as it got. I can enjoy now in my old age. Saw him in the 70s but was for the support band Richard Hell and the Voidoids. I think the first of his records we bought was I don't want to go to Chelsea.

Runaround Sue - Dion 1961

Runaround Sue wiki

Saturday night selection.

Dion says of this clip

'' I recorded Runaround Sue with “The Del-Satins” and black musicians from the Apollo theater, Buddy Lucas on Sax, Sticks Evans on drums, Panama Francis on percussion, Teacho Wilshire on piano, Milt Hinton on bass, and Mickey “Guitar” Baker. ~ When Hollywood filmed this rendition they use all white actors playing musicians behind me, knowing the film wouldn't get played in the South at that time.''

Susan and the IRA bomb at Bath

1974 Susan was a trainee nurse in Bath staying in nurses lodgings in Trim Street. 9 O'clock in the morning that day Susan finished her shift and went to have a look at the record shop in the Corridor and a 5lb bomb went off. Narrowly avoided the blast. See pictures of the damage here.  Just a small incident that got revived when we were listening to an Eno album.

Dave Clark Five - When 1965

There are many reasons to like this Dave Clark Five clip. It's from an ace film called Catch Us If You Can and it's partly filmed in Bath and the West. This is the Mendips. It also is a really great song.

XTC - Making Plans For Nigel 1979

Any XTC fans reading this? The WFMU show Atlantic Tunnel had an interview and special (2 hours) with Colin Moulding of XTC - a band from Swindon England. Listen to it here.  I am not a huge fan but I found it interesting.

Joe 90!

In 1980 Animals and men did our biggest gig to about 3000 people. Backstage I wondered whether to wear my specs and decided to wear them and be damned. As we walked on stage someone shouted from the crowd 'Joe 90!' which hit a nerve. Around the time of the original series I had to wear corrective specs and I got the nickname then.  People can be cruel. Opening titles and theme.

Buckland Dinham village

When I was a young teen I used to hang out at Buckland quite a lot. I had a mate Tom who lived in a converted schoolhouse there. Another friend lived in one of the estate cottages at Orchardleigh house and we used to do haymaking on the local farm for money. Hard work but bought me my first Levis. Of course there was the Fountain inn - read about it here - but we used to frequent the youth club and did fence erecting and babysitting around the village too. We used to cycle everywhere and Frome was only 3 miles from Buckland Dinham. One interesting fact about Buckland - it had in the 19th century an incident where a farmer auctioned his wife which was the basis of a plotline in Thomas Hardy's book Mayor of Casterbridge. There is a good pub still in the village the Bell which has all manner of interesting events to enjoy. There is a single standing stone near the Orchardleigh estate.

Hannover VW factory in the mid 70s

When I was a young teenager I participated against my wishes in a German exchange. My 'friend' and I didn't get on in fact we had a fight at Hanover zoo and I fractured my wrist punching him in the head. But we did do some organised trips as there was a quite large amount of us. One trip I remember was a visit to where they made the VW campers and vans. Here are some photos I found on the web. More on my German exchange here

Market Hall Frome

This is now the music venue the Cheese and Grain. In my time in Frome this was derelict and what was known as the Market Hall was a smaller prefab type of hut now no longer there. Seen Adam Ant and the Fall at the Cheese and Grain which was strange for an old Fromie like me. Bo Diddley was due to play there near my birthday but he had a stroke which sadly ended his life. Biggest band to play there to date must be the Foo fighters. Not my cup of tea but a big group.

"Devil Got My Woman" by Skip James 1966

Frome's Trinity area aka Chinatown

Thought I would write about this part of Frome. A warren of small streets dating from around 1700. Weavers dwellings mostly they are reckoned to be one of the first purpose built artisan housing in the UK. Some of them were connected by the top floor so cloth could move from house to house. There were pubs and corner shops. Most got demolished in the 1960s but a few streets remained. During the war the black US troops were confined locally to Chinatown's pubs.  Some of the houses had cellars and tunnels that went under some of it. One old style pub still survives: the Lamb and Fountain visit it while it lasts Fromies.

King Biscuit Time - Sonny Boy Williamson

This is a great album. Comprising SBW's earliest recordings for the Trumpet label which includes some of his best songs. Also as bonus tracks are SBW in the King Biscuit Time radio show studio performing a few songs at the end of his life and very interesting it is too.

Today we listened to this - an hour long set by Tom Hanks. Now uploaded to Mixcloud. Very good.

Silk Cut cigarettes cinema commercial 1979

I remember this ad very well as this was a time when I used to go to the cinema a lot. It is very archaic for nowadays - blackface and all the other crimes. But interesting as a period piece.

Rocket From The Tombs - Sonic Reducer

Much better version than the Dead Boys is the original by Rocket from the Tombs

From the Day the Earth met Rocket from the Tombs which is a great collection of lo-fi recordings from around 75.

Dead Boys - All This And More Live at CBGB 1977

I find the Dead Boys pretty funny - they are like a punk Spinal Tap. I mean who starts a song with?

Can I describe what it's like
To have sex with the lights on?
And would ya feel right if I did ya tonight?
And put the bite on?

All this and more little girl
How bout on the floor little girl
No time to implore ya girl
I'm just a dead boy
You know that I'm just a dead boy
I wanna be a dead boy
I'll die for you, if you want me to

Jackdaw summer

One summer we raised some Jackdaws. One was named Tizzy by our son. They joined the locals when they got old enough but would often come and see us. At one stage they would wake us up by sitting on the phone wires calling out til we got up and fed them.

Howlin' Wolf - My Mind Is Ramblin' - 1966

This is a little known song by the Wolf but I love it. Partly about a Rocket Oldsmobile car. We used to do this in the Mud Dogs.

One of my favourites from Richard Hell & the Voidoids.

I hope I don't seem immodest when I tell you that my, my
